Milk Protein Concentrate
So I know we're supposed to be drinking whey Protein isolate shakes, but does anyone know why this particular protein? I was talking to a friend and she said that Whey Protein is very hard for the body to break down. She was suggesting a some Protein shake that tastes delicious and she sent me a photo of the ingredients. The first ingredient was Milk Protein Concentrate. A few ingredients after, Whey Protein isolate came up, but I guess I wanted to know if any of you have tried this kind of protein instead of whey? Why do we have to use whey and not some other forms of protein? I might ask my dietician when I see her on Friday, because if my friend brings over samples and it tastes good, maybe I can use that instead!

December 19th sleevers?
I was sleeved 12/17. My dietician said to get in Protein the first week, but it's not that important. This week I'm on full liquids, I've been drinking muscle milk, creamy Soups, sugar free pudding, and Water and have been getting in at least 40g of protein if not more. I haven't been keeping track of liquids like I should but I know it's still under 64oz. Clear Liquids you could try besides water: flavored water (Fruit2O, Propel) crystal light Powerade Zero (MY LIFE LINE DURING MY CLEAR LIQUIDS STAGE) Wonton Soup from a local Chinese place (broth only) Decaffeinated tea (Lipton, I even found decaf earl grey) Sugar free popsicles (maybe this will help if you can't keep anything else down besides plain water) Sugar free Jello and remember to get lots of rest. Your body is in starvation mode so energy will be low if you aren't getting in protein your first week!

3 Days Post Op And Tired Of Clears!
I was on clear liquids for a week, and I unfortunately couldn't stand the Isopure drinks even with ice and dilution. So I didn't have Protein for a week besides the minimal amounts in broths I stuck with: chicken broth (wonton soup, campbell's and strain it, I also went to a flea market and had mexican soup that had cilantro in it) Vegetable broth French onion soup (just broth) sugar free popsicles sugar free Jello Powerade zero Water crystal light propel water

Is there a drug store open near you on xmas? Children's liquid tylenol might provide some relief until you can visit your doctor

21 and wanting a new me
I'm 21 and I think this might be the best decision I've made for myself. I'm still regretting it right now since it's the holidays and I can't eat all the delicious foods bc I'm on liquids, but come next month, I'm going to be more positive. I just can't wait to do all the things I've wanted to do with my body! To be very fit (even though I was before surgery) and finally see my hard work pay off. I can't wait to go clothes shopping a year from now. I'm also a little nervous for the attention and body policing. Especially about the comments about my weight loss. However, I think you'll realize that we made the right choice! I wish you the best of luck and a speedy healthy recovery.

Sleeved this morning
I only had gas pains while I was in the hospital, but I walked A LOT. I mean like every two hours, making circles all around the bariatric floor all night and day. I also found that while in the hospital elevating my bed to make me sit up straight and the de-elevating it almost where I was almost flat on my back helped shift the gas around and ease the pain significantly.

Psoriasis or Eczema
My father was very overweight and lost over 100 pounds using weight watchers. He also takes so many vitamins that he has his own drawer for them. His psoriasis on his elbows has completely vanished, and he claims it's the vitamin E pills and the biotin he takes. But I think he might just be a miracle case

Dec. 17 Sleevers - How are you on week out?
Glad to see you're doing well. I'm doing okay with the liquids, it's just hard with the protein since I just started. I'm only getting about 40-50 grams in. My next appointment is on the 28th. Hopefully the doctor and nut will be happy with my progress.

Dec. 17 Sleevers - How are you on week out?
Holy cow! I'd be so scared of a leak. I did eat a few crumbs of bread and just let them dissolve in my mouth as well as 1/4tbsp of Peanut Butter over the course of 20mins but full on food makes me nervous. Just be careful. Don't want to aggravate the staple lines!

Dec. 17 Sleevers - How are you on week out?
Hi everyone! I'm also a 17th sleever. I'm down 23 pounds (although I didn't have a pre-op liquid stage so I account the loss to that). Some days I feel normal, and other days I feel so tired I want to cry. Showering actually takes a lot of out of me and leaves me dizzy. It's been hard not eating all week. I wouldn't care if I never had chicken broth EVER AGAIN. I'm having serious head hunger, and I admit to chewing and spitting food at least 4x this week. Today is my family holiday gathering and my father is making all these delicious foods that I can't eat, and I have to deal with my entire extended family asking me questions, but I'm prepared to defend myself if I get negative comments! I don't regret this surgery one bit, it's just super hard around the holidays. My nana called it modern day torture haha. I started full liquids yesterday (Monday instead of Tuesday) because I just couldn't wait. I couldn't stand Clear Liquids any longer. But now I know in about 2 days I'll be sick of muscle milk, regular milk, sugar free pudding, and creamy broths. I also stretched my back out in my sleep last night and it pulled on my stomach stitches and holy cow did that burn and wake me up out of a deep sleep! No nausea at all after the first day home. The pain meds have only been used a few times this week after walking around way too much with muscle soreness. I'm glad to see everyone is doing so well!

Is it possible to lose all the weight with VSG? Why don't some people?
I often don't think BMI is the best calculator for health. I mean a few years ago they changed the BMI overweight range from 28 to 25, making hundreds of thousands if not millions overweight over night! And some people who are really thin have high cholesterol and BP. it's about how we treat our bodies and what we put into them. This is a tool! I think people just need to find a good weight that works for them.

Any tips on fading the surgical incisions?
Just some suggestions but vitamin E gel pills might help. If you can, try rubbing them to help increase blood flow. I've also heard that going tanning can help with the scarring later, but I'm against using tanning beds. maybe in the summer months you can catch some rays on your tummy!

Scared of...
My fear is a leak too. The only other fears I have is gaining it back and that we don't know the health outcomes of this type of surgery many years down the road. I'm 21 now, but will I have health issues like deficiencies or any other horror stories from gastric bypass patients (even though vsg is different) when I'm 40?

Why in the hell did I have this sugery during the holidays! I'm one week out and craving food bad!
I was also sleeved on 12/17 and I feel like on x-mas day while everyone is eating delicious foods, I'll be in my room hiding from everyone to avoid from crying or something lol. I chose this time because I needed to heal before heading back to college. I kind of regret it right now, but I know in May when I graduate it'll feel good to be 30+ pounds down! I think it's important to realize you'll be losing weight over the holidays while people may gain, and yeah, it stinks you'll miss out on the food, but it's just 2 days or so! 2 LITTLE DAYS OUT OF THE WHOLE YEAR. We can make it!

What led you to your decision to have surgery so young?
I'm 21 and I was just sleeved a few days ago. I felt very conflicted about this surgery. I've spent the last 2 years navigating the world of feminism and the whole fat acceptance/body positivity movement. I felt that I was finally starting say that it's okay to be fat. And to me, IT STILL IS! There really is proof out there you can be fat and healthy. You just have to eat very well and exercise... and you don't have to lose weight in the process. However, my beliefs about the HAES movement and fat people do not change the social stigma about fat people. YES, THERE ARE MANY UNHEALTHY FAT PEOPLE OUT THERE because they don't eat right. But there are plenty of healthy fat people out there too. My choice was mobility and health. I have PCOS and diabetes runs in my family. Despite exercising, I have high cholesterol. I remember being in high school having a blood test and my doctor said I would need to be on medication to control it if I didn't lower it. Well, I never went on medication nor did I do anything to help it. I've been active since I was a child. I was on the soccer team in high school and in recreational leagues growing up. I've reached this point where I want to help my PCOS, I want to help my heart, and prevent diabetes (if possible) and I want to physically change my body. I also have a hard time not eating a lot and feeling full. The whole stomach being smaller sounded excellent compared to gastric bypass which may experience stretching. There are so many things I want to do with my body that I just can't at this weight. I bicycle, but I want to get into legitimate cycling and do races. I used to run, but now I can barely make it down a street. Hills kill me and so do stairs. I want to run a 5K and eventually do a triathlon. I want to do rock wall climbing and not have to worry about weight limits and the harness not fitting. I want to go kayaking and not worry about my hips not fitting. I'd like to go to a theme park and fit in ALL of the rides. And for once, I'd like the buy clothes that I love because the world of fashion is so crappy at making cute fashionable inexpensive clothing for young plus size men and women as well as older women. We live in a thin privileged society, and for once I'd like to live that privilege and examine its effects on me!

Surgery in 2 DAYS!
Best of luck to both of you! See you on the loser's bench

One day post op
The only suggestion I was given was to walk. I was walking about 6-7 hours after surgery, and walked about every 2 hours for about 10-15 minutes. I think it helped me a lot in moving the gas around. Also elevating and de-elevating my hospital bed helped provide relief. Sometimes I would lay completely flat and the pain would go away. Other times I had to sit almost straight up to get relief. Just a suggestion! I try to walk around my neighborhood every day despite feeling exhausted. Unfortunately, pain medicine won't do anything for gas pain, but just incision pains. So tell your hubby to walk when he's ready!

Not Telling People....
I have told my closest friends at home and at college. i tried to hide it from the majority of my family, but despite pleading with my mother to not tell anyone (our family gossips and talks so much smack about one another) she has told a lot of my extended family and her friends. I guess for me, if people ask, I'm just going to tell them I had surgery. It really is a personal choice, but if people want to tell me "I cheated" or "That's dangerous" I just can't be bothered because if they can't support me or at least be nice about it, then I don't need them in my life. Just consider carefully who you tell, and even if people don't support you, you know you did this for a reason and that's all that matters

On my way to surgery in 20 minutes.
Thank you all for the good luck wishes. I was a rough 2 days. But I can say that about 7 hours after surgery, I was up and walking. The nurses were amazed and the doctors joked that I must want to get out of there fast. However, I didn't see a lot of other bariatric patients walking around like I did. I couldn't sleep for more than 2 hours at a time, but I would just walk circles around the surgery floor. I think that's what saved me from having gas pain in my chest and shoulders. [TMI] It's all coming out the other end hahah

On my way to surgery in 20 minutes.
I had to stay an extra night because I couldn't keep the tylenol codeine down. vomiting wasn't very fun :[ I was released today and I'm feeling much better. I keep drinking liquids, but I'm doing a bad job at pacing myself. I get really full, and I'm worried I might cause myself to have a leak or something. How are you feeling today? Can you keep your liquids down? REMEMBER TO WALK!!!

On my way to surgery in 20 minutes.
I'm so nervous! I think I'm worried about the pain and the fact that part of my body will be gone than the actual procedure itself. I keep thinking: what if this is a mistake? but then I think about how long this journey has been and how much I've wanted this, and I just want it to be done in over with. I was lucky that I only had to fast for 24 hours and I couldn't drink anything in the last 8. I can't wait to meet everyone on the losers bench! Here's to an amazing journey. xx Gabby
