Got some bad news. Through all this extensive pre-op testing, it was discovered in my blood work that on 3 results, my body is showing elevated white blood cells and high markers for inflammation. My PCP is confused and has no idea what's going on. He's tested for parvo, fifths disease, and reumatoid arthritis and lupus, but all came back negative. He is now referring me to a reumatologist for more testing. The earliest appt I can get with them is October 31st I am hoping for surgery at the end of December. Does anyone think this may hold up my surgery? I will be finished with it all and the 6 months in December.

Are you self-pay or will your insurance cover it? Your BMI seems so low for such a drastic surgery, but that's your call to make!

Just curious...why is it that after WLS or a great amt. of weight loss in general, a person's head tends to look too big for their body? Like a bobblehead! Silly, I know, but a serious question lol

How does he even know you aren't using it as often as you should? Does he check? That's a little ridiculous! Those things are so uncomfortable!

I'm not gunna lie...that thought has crossed into my head many, many times. I've seen family members and friends who have had the surgery look down right sick looking and too thin. This is NOT the case with every bypass patient, but it's also a concern of mine. I'd like to be healthy after this surgery, not 110 lbs....but maybe I'm being a little unrealistic lol

It's hard to determine, because I'm not really sure anyone knows the answer to this. In terms of the supervised diet and losing weight...it's kinda "damned if you do, yet damned if you don't". I would say don't fall below a BMI of 40 for sure...just to be careful

Here goes! I am doing the 6 month diet with PCP and am set to finish in December with it. I really, really want the surgery during winter break right after finals and a few days before Christmas (I'm in college). Can I submit to insurance in mid November even though only 5 will be documented (of course I'd still be doing the last weigh-in)...? I just know it takes time for insurance to make a decision and I'd need a two week liquid diet before surgery. Another reason why I ask is because I don't think I even need the 6 month weigh-ins! I've spoken to a million reps from my insurance and they say they require a 5 year weight history (which I have) and a prior authorization. My patient advocate at my surgeon's office keeps telling me I need it, so I figured I'd do it anyway since I can't really have the surgery earlier than December with school and all. I wonder if my patient advocate is making me do the 6 months in order to get greater chances of approval or as a precaution. So...all in all...could I submit to insurance in November? That would be my 5th weigh-in.

Hmm. I'd like to know too. Some people say they go by your first ever weigh-in at your consult with the surgeon but idk

Wrong. Those foods are mushy, yes, but loaded with tons of carbs/fat/sodium and 0 nutritional benefits. Were you explained by your surgeon in detail what is acceptable and what's not? Pasta is a no-go, practically for all of our WLS life from here on out lol. Good luck

My UHC plan is great too...but they also only cover one weight loss surgery as well =\ That's better than nothing though!

We only get ONE BODY in this lifetime. That says enough. Who would want to hurt their bodies like that on purpose AND after a major surgery?

I've been every weight under the sun due to chronic yo-yo dieting. At my highest, 265, I now wear a 20 in lane bryant. At my lowest, 127, I was wearing a size 9. At 165, I used to wear a 12/13. I'm 5'4". I know for sure I'd probably never be a size 3 lol.

This is confusing to me as well. My BMI is 46 from my first weight with PCP and surgeon. If I lose weight and drop to a 40, is that ok? I always hear they go by your first weigh in with surgeon.

I have UHC and was dead set on getting a vertical sleeve. I researched it, was excited, and found out they don't cover any type of WLS unless it's RnY bypass. I've researched RnY and I'm now okay with getting it, but just check with UHC on their requirements and coverage. Every UHC plan is different.

I keep getting mixed messages too about requirements, etc. No one seems to know much. I have UHC Community Plan. I'm doing all the pre-op work now...but geez...some answers would be nice.

Usually those with a BMI of 50 or greater will have to do luvenox injections. My sister gets hers twice a day for a week.

Is it normal to throw up post-op day 3? Not a lot, but some nausea? I think painkillers would make the nausea worse, right?

Tracey is doing ok. She is in surgical ICU still with very much pain. They are keeping her in ICU because her stomach is very swollen? Is this normal? =\

Here's an update on Tracey (I'm her sister) ... She is all set and ready for surgery and should be going in within 15 mins. Doctors found a hiatal hernia and will also repair that. We'll keep you posted! Good luck to everyone else having surgery this day!
