  1. I just wanted to thank everyone. I had almost said "No" to going because I wasn't sure how long the effects lasted but your info helped me decide to have our friends prebuy the tickes. I felt fine as soon as I got home around 12:30....a 1 hour nap in the afternoon and ready for the show which was hilarious....glad I went.
  2. This was a hard point for me as well, (the tie in with memory and learning) as I have a job where I have to be on my toes about details and because I am also taking college courses. However, I also read articles about the possibility of a connection with obesity/diabetes and Alzheimer's. The article involved GB patients not VSG but it sounds to me that there is a Alzheimers risk if I don't have the surgery and cannot lose weight. My mother and her twin sister are both insulin dependent Type II diabetes and have similar weight struggles to me. I am having this surgery because I know that the same is right around the corner if something doesn't happen. It seems like there is an increased risk of Alzheimers if I continue to be obese and develop the inevitable diabetes. That doesn't mean I don't rethink my decision at times. Each of us has to read and research and make our personal decision (and cross our fingers). Good luck to you. Article about Obesity and Type 2 diabetes increasing the chance of getting Alzheimer's disease.
  3. Well, I've already found two on that search list that must be a mistake. Two that I checked said zero carbs and they were dishes that were highly unlikely to be zero. I guess if it lists the carbs it's probably OK, but if it says 0, it probably is not.
  4. If you want variety you can also check out some of the Lean Cuisines. Sometimes I want something quick for a meal and so I keep some on hand but only buy ones that are 20 carbs or less. There are a few and that if you subtract the Fiber to get the net carbs, I've seen them less than 10 carbs. You have to look through the choices. I think I've found 5 or 6 that I like that are less than 20. If that is my main meal, than having 20 for the other two meals isn't too bad. If you go here http://www.leancuisine.com/Products/Search.aspx?CarbsMax=23&CarbsMin=0&ViewAll=True you can search by carbs, fats etc. I searched for anything from 0 to 23 carbs and there were 9 options.
  5. I learned a long time ago that I had to be the one to say NO because even though my friends at work know I am trying to eat healthy there is always some office celebration going on or someone bringing in food for us. People equate food with love and caring so their heart is in the right place but many of us pay the price for all this "love". My closest office staff don't push me, they know I'm trying. My mantra for the last year or so when someone brings in a dessert or sweet: "Let me smell it". I smell whatever it is and that is my treat and I am fine to walk away. A few times I have said just let me have one bite and so I eat that bite very slowly. Maybe the small amounts and eating slowly was practice for my new lifestyle although the cake would not be a good source of Protein nutrition. My date is 5 weeks and 2 days....seems like a life time. I don't have the negative reaction from people, but I haven't really told family mainly because I had a family member have serious complications about 6 years ago from GB surgery and so when I brought up that I was considering lapband it did not go over well with my kids. Since then I have zipped it and realize that they don't need the stress of worrying about it. Once I have the surgery, I will tell them and anyone else who wants to know. I figure if someone else is inspired by my success than I want them to know, maybe it will help them to make a decision to change.
  6. I would like to try kayaking. Now my balance is so off that I don't think I could get sat down in one without flipping it. Also playing volleyball or softball or basketball......all things I loved as a child/young adult. Participating in group exercises without worrying how I look at my size (jazzercize, zumba, Water aerobics). Less knee pain Decreased urinary incontinence OH YEAH! Excursion to find great photography, that might include hiking, mountain hiking More energy to do big projects around the house (stripping wallpaper, redoing sheetrock, landscaping) Learning to dive I'm sure I'll think of more.
  7. I believe the it is important to use so that at the time of surgery your body has the best chance to recover the quickest. Many people think it is just about getting a good night's sleep but there is more to it. Just do your best to get used to it before surgery and hope that someday after surgery you might not need it any more. I have never been tested, but I am encouraging my husband to be tested and he said he would if I would. HAHA Hopefully some people with CPAP experience can advise you on the transition period. Many friends have posted that they feel so much better once they got used to the CPAP, that it gave them more energy and alertness during the day.
  8. It may work differently. I had my reg Dr. refer me to the bariatric center. There I saw a surgeon, a few nutritionist visits, psych exam, which was all covered by my insurance from the referral of my primary care physician. Once that was done, the bariatric center sent to my insurance to get approval for my surgery.
  9. I have heard that sleeves do not tolerate rice well especially early on but I have no experience with it yet.
  10. I haven't started my two week liquid yet but a friend at work did. She said the first 2 or 3 days were the worst and then after that it wasn't so bad, you got used to it and your body adjusted. I figure that I'll get through it. I want my surgery to have the highest chance of success and I will abide by the rules which I understand shrinks my liver and reduces those risks. Each person has to make their own decision but I've tolerated many extreme diets on the short term so I can manage this two weeks of protein drinks just like I did those other fad diets.
  11. No lifting at my job....at my desk, on the computer or meeting with people most of the day. Dr. has said 2 weeks although my post op appt with him is 2 weeks and 2 days after surgery so I'm not sure if I wait until after that appt to be cleared or if I can automatically just go back after the two weeks.
  12. She may not fully understand what "change" means and how it will impact her. She also may be somewhat afraid about the fact that you are going to be gone away for a few days. Have you gone away in the past or is that a rarity. That might be part of her fear that she isn't expressing. Confirm that when you come back from surgery, you will look the same and that slowly you will get healthier and can do more fun things together.I love the idea someone else posted about a list of fun things you can do during your losing journey. Good luck, our kids are so important to us but as with most things with raising children, you have to do the right thing by them even though they don't want it on the short term (think going to the Dr/Dentist, waiting for a treat until after supper, doing their chores, etc).
  13. You think 11 lbs in 2-1/2 weeks is not losing? I think that is great. Hang in there and don't be in a rush to drop the weight instantly. It's not realistic and it will just get you discouraged. I know it is hard to be patient, I can relate to that.....my surgery isn't until 5/21 and it seems like my life is on hold. I know that it will be a few months before a dramatic change. My hope is that I can lose 17 lbs in 1 month and than I figure it will be more like 7-8 p/month after that but at that rate I should be close to goal by Christmas, way better than any other diet I have been on. Hang on and see how you feel 3 months out. For the constipation you should check with your Dr. I don't think they want you to have severe constipation and straining (sorry tmi). It seems like my nutritionist said if that was to happen, I should use baby food prunes but you better check with your Dr. or nutritionist to be sure. I know they can give you something to help.
  14. Two weeks of protein shakes and liquids. 1 day of clear liquids, nothing after midnight day of surgery. Sugar free jello and popsicles are OK for the two week period. I plan on blending my protein shakes with ice to eat with a spoon instead of drinking them for the times I feel I need to eat something.
  15. Hmmmm, nothing like that from my Dr. So many variations on pre, surgery and post procedures.
  16. Do you think the lactose intolerance could be caused by drinking milk on your unhealed stomach? There probably haven't been any scientific studies but I'm wondering if there could be a connection? I'm just thinking about how infants are supposed to avoid some foods until a certain age because having them too young can cause allergies.....and so I'm wondering if it pays to avoid milk products the first little while.
  17. I have my pre-surgery endoscopy next Wednesday at 11am. My husband's cousin just called and wants us to go to a comedian Bob Marley show that evening. I am not sure if I will still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia at that time or not. Anyone with experience with the test, care to comment how you felt about 6 hours after endoscopy? Thanks
  18. So no cooking?.....I usually cook my steel cut oats (big pot) cool and then refrigerate and eat through the week, this sounds even better. Using the yogurt and protein powder is a great way to up the protein and then to throw in the fish oil gets that out of the way without the ewww taste. Thanks for sharing.
  19. Wow, pina colada fish oil....who knew? I have the lemon flavored liquid, haven't tried it yet but good to know there are options.
  20. Does Click have caffeine? The website sounded like it did and I didn't see a decaf option. Did I miss it? I have to be on decaf for awhile, maybe forever....I can't remember.....sigh.....
  21. My surgery isn't until May 21 so it will be a little while before my pre-op diet but it will consist of two weeks of liquid only, then the last day of clear liquids and nothing after midnight the day before surgery. The two weeks of liquid will be 4 protein shakes and clear liquids in between. Yes, it's all about shrinking the liver I believe.
  22. Maybe the relish/pickle issue is because vinegar is acidic and at least at first we need to avoid acidic foods. On the other hand, a tiny amount mixed with another food doesn't sound too bad but check with Doc or Nutr for sure.
  23. A friend sent me this but I think it was just that day and the first 100 callers. You could try and talk them into it though. Bariatric Advantage free offer
  24. OH, and I think I'll try the cherry ones, I like sweet tarts. The choc ones work if you add a little Water to them when chewing them, if not, they tend to feel like you are eating cocoa powder. I got my free bag of Bariatric chewy bites today and they taste just like a caramel chew but would be a bit more expensive than the dry chewables with my corrected cost calculations Sometimes the extra is worth it so will continue to get at least some of my calcium from the chewy bites.
