This so bothers me when I hear spouses say that we're selfish for taking the initiative for a healthier life style. So I really would like to know who is the selfish one here? The spouse or the person seeking a healthier life style...? If your marriage is at risk because you choose this procedure, then you marriage was at risk way before this........this might be a good time to seek a counselor to help work through these issues and strengthen your marriage..... the surgery will not put your marriage at risk, it's already at risk before you made this choice. So sorry, I'm not directing this at any individual, just food for thought....

I am sure many of us are food addicts.
This finally clicked with me. A response from a person about my head hunger really turned on a light for Mexican she said " I've heard head hunger is addiction". I don't know why, but it really turned on a light for me. I knew " sure there must be some sort of food addiction", but it never was a serious thought. Just kind of a " yeah, ok blaa blaa blaa"
I am a recovering alcoholic, going on 10 years and I quit smoking the same time. I kicked my Peanut Butter addiction in March and now..... a food paddiction I am no longer in denial about.
I'm sorry if this makes anyone upset that I've been in denial, like, who goes into weight loss surgery denying a food addiction.
I'm almost 3 years post op and my head hunger was from day one. If I think of how many times I actually feel hunger.... 2 times a day.
I need help I order to work on this. Not sure where to start.

Well done you for telling it straight. Find group support for your alcohol problem and maybe a nutritionist could help you get back on track with your eating program. Best Wishes

I am almost 5 years out from surgery. I lost around 155 pounds and kept it off for about 3.5 years. But in the past 1.5 years, I have suffered from depression and started drinking alcohol excessively ( I typically would have ate food excessively in the past). In the past I could have several drinks and be fine; however post surgery the side effects were much more severe (depression, a feeling of real dependency, blacking out suddenly with no recollection of where the cutoff point would be i.e. 2 drinks now was just as strong as drinking 5) The alcohol goes so quickly into your system that it is a real danger if not properly monitored. Although my eating habits didn't change, without daily exercise and with the added calories of excessive alcohol consumption, I regained around 60 pounds. In addition to the weight gain I have struggled with the affects of alcohol dependency, which I never had experienced before. As VSG patients we were all cautioned on drinking and how it affects us differently after surgery. I didn't really take heed to those warnings until it had become a problem for me. I am working on it daily now and also am struggling to lose the weight all over again, which feels pretty much like as difficult as it had been prior to surgery. I think this is not talked about enough and I'm sure I am not the only VSG patient who has experienced this. As a community being open with one another, and as individual seeking out help earlier, I probably wouldn't be struggling with these 60 pounds now. Anyone who's been through it should reach out sooner than later. Not only have I suffered from this issue, I have had to deal with the fact that I messed up my own progress and success and now have to deal with the ramifications of starting all over again so to speak. This I can say for certain, staying in a support group and dealing with your issues is imperative to continued success in this journey. I'm not sure if I'll loose all of the 60 I've regained again, but I am willing to fight the battle to do this all over again and to warn others of how dangerous alcohol consumption is for us post surgery!

What kind of issues? Complications? They usually show up earlier. Regain? Definitely possible and in fact quite common.

I am almost 6 years out. The only issue is my head hunger. I still have to watch my calories. I gained 30 lbs by drinking frappacinos and then the sugar monster came on. It is still a lot of diligence.

It's all about presentation... With a smile, or a fork in the eye?
Assuming its the former, tell her she has the better (shoes, hair, husband...) so y'all should fight it out. Whoever wins gets to be thin AND get her hubby.
    And BING! the bell rings...

    Hello All,
Glad I found this thread. I have also gain a little weight back and scared that I'm going to regain all my weight back. I have gain 10 pounds because of careless eating; I am a known stress eater. I know if I do not take control now, my regain will only get worse. I recently gave up chewing gum and notice that I have been substituting my gum chewing for carbs. I will try my hardest to start on Tuesday; it's going to be hard because we are having chips and all kinds of dips at work. I recently bought a treadmill and did great for about 2 weeks . I think having a support group that knows what I am going through would benefit me in my new start.
    Thanks in advance!

Well I need to lose 50 to get back to my lowest. The weight has gone on gradually over the past 3 years, I knew I had to get it in hand but didn't. How did I get in this position well it's wine and snacking (grazing). My husband and I can share a bottle of wine (or 2!) but it is accompanied by crisps (chips) and a family bar of chocolate. Cakes and biscuits have also creeped in to my diet. See I know exactly what I'm doing wrong. I do have good restriction and if I eat correctly I get full on quite small amounts. The other thing I have done wrong is give up exercise. I don't like exercising but I do know it is essential.

My plan: initially there will be no wine at home and consequently cut out the crisps and chocolate. Exercise. The number 50 is too big for me and quite frightening so I am going to cut it down into sections of 5 which seems so much more manageable.

I have started today and I have used my elliptical and there is no wine in the house.

Good morning friends! I am excited about what today will bring as I embark on my journey of getting back to the basics. I plan on eating 3 meals today with no snacking in between and one Protein Shake to make sure I get in all my Protein. I plan on trying to plan out my meals for the week so I don't get overwhelmed. I also am striving to drink at least 64oz of Water if not more. I hope and pray you all have a wonderful day️

May God bless you and keep you️

If you want to join me, let's do this!

Good job on preparing and losing the weight. It is amazing how fast our medical issues decrease or cease to exist. The hard part is making sure we change our maladaptive eating habits so we don't regain the excess weight we had. Our minds can really do a number on us. Keep eating healthy and don't let your head hunger get ya. CONGRATS!

It is somewhat disappointing when we go out to eat with family or friends and we can't eat the foods we love after the surgery. I went out to eat with my family and was so looking forward to vegetable beef Soup broth at my favorite restaurant only to find out that they didn't have it on the menu that day. I was totally lost. I ended up drinking some au jus and that was so unfulfilling. I was actually drooling over my hubby's hamburger. I was in a state of panic at that time! Of course it was all in my mine. Now I can eat anything I want but in smaller portions. I eat about 1/4th of a meal served at a restaurant. Now I'm going to just be ordering off the side menu as an add on to my hubby's dinner or lunch. Yep, that's even tooooooo much! I love it though.

I would choose this again in a heart beat! I've had no complications and have my diabetes in remission. I have lost 95% of my excess weight and I eat so much healthier. How great is that? I love my sleeve and my body size

Caligirl92: everything will go very well. You will have a nice sleep and wake up with little pain. Feel free to use your morphine pump as much as you need it. Heck, I pushed the button every time I got a chance. Oh and I sleep in an upright position. I believe that helped me with acid and gas. Got home and very little problems. The staff at the hospital were great. HUGS and best wishes....Can't wait to hear about your new journey.....
