I had my surgery on 10/22 and have a couple of questions. Feel free to answer as I am not real sure what I should expect right now.

1. Is it normal to not go #2?

2. Any tricks to get the gas out of your system?

3. When you burp, is it normal to feel like all of your insides are rumbling?

4. Anyone know of a Protein supplement that is not milked based. (I cannot do anything milk based at this point. Lets just leave it at, we're not friends!)

I would appreciate any help with any of these questions! And I look forward to sharing my long term success with everyone.

I just had my surgery on 10/14. Answers to questions:

1. it is normal not to go #2. I am doing liquids for 2 weeks so there is no food to cause you to have a bowel movement. As you introduce foods, you will start once again. They also say that a diet high in Protein can cause Constipation but everyone is different. My doctor recommends a stool softner and a mild laxative to help.

2. To get the gas out of your system, they suggest to walk, walk, walk.

3.When you burp, it may feel like that. Remember you had major surgery and disrupted your tummy. It may take time for things to heal.

4. There are Protein supplements that you add to Water, I haven't tried any myself but you could check out the various wesites that offer Protein powder or a health food store (like GNC) where they sell them.

Good luck!!

I had my surgery the same day!

GasX strips seem to help with the gas (at least for me they have, but I'll admit, it hasn't been a big problem for me).

They have Isopure Protein drinks that are not milk based - you can get them at GNC or Vitaminshoppe - I've tried the blue raspberry (it's okay) and then the cytosport watermelon Protein Drink (not that good)....I did not like the Isopure that much, but some people prefer it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
