refried beans

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has a refried Beans recipe. The canned has so much sodium in them and I want to make the fat free with less sodium. I have searched on line but I am not coming up with much. In fact the ripes that I have found is loaded with sodium.

Try dried/powdered refried Beans, they taste a million times better than canned. I get a brand Santa Fe Bean Co, but I can only find them on Amazon.com, Albertsons use to carry them but not now.

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone has a refried Beans recipe. The canned has so much sodium in them and I want to make the fat free with less sodium. I have searched on line but I am not coming up with much. In fact the ripes that I have found is loaded with sodium.

There are several brands of fat free refried Beans (Ortega, Old El Paso, and probably others). You could compare to see who has the least sodium. I haven't tried the powdered so I can't speak to that.

For a recipe (also great for parties) I make a Mexican dip:

1 15 oz can fat free refried beans

2 8 oz or 1 12 oz tub fat free cream cheese

1 16-18 oz jar of chunky salsa (naturally fat free)

1 8 oz package of Kraft Free fat free Mozarella or Cheddar shredded cheese

Mix the refried beans and cream cheese (takes a little effort, but easier than trying to layer). Cover with chunky salsa, and cover that with the shredded cheese. You can serve cold (easiest way if you take it to a party) or heat in oven at 200-250 degrees for a couple hours to have a Mexican fondue (melted cheese and warmed ingredients). Serve with baked taco chips.

I try to minimize salt, sugar and fat. Sometimes it is a tradeoff, a little more of one, little less of the other, but overall low on all 3 as much as possible.

Hope this recipe helps. Good luck on your journey.

In rereading your post, I think you were looking for a recipe to make your own refried Beans. Sorry. Hope you can still use the Mexican dip recipe.

I'm so busy keeping track of Protein and Fiber, etc., that sodium gets neglected. It's great if you can keep an eye on it! I've just noticed all the organic refried Beans on the market now. Quite a selection. I would prefer homemade, too, but I also like to keep some emergency fast foods on hand, living in earthquake country. Like canned beans that can be eaten straight out of a can. Have you looked at Eden's recipes?

I just looked at two of my refried bean cans. Amy's has 440 mg sodium, and Bearitos has 530 mg. It seems like it's difficult to get lower sodium. I like the canned diced green chiles for flavor, but I guess they have a good sodium content, too.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
