Pill crushing - Ideas needed for taste

Recommended Posts

Hi what are you all doing to mask the taste of your crushed pills? They are SOOOO BITTER! UGH. I tried mixing in a Protein shake and that didn't work. Anything? I'm not sure which particular pill is the culprit - allegra or bupropion (2) but 3 pills = nasty.

Thanks in advance.

Helen

PS I am told these don't come in liquid.

Have you tried swallowing them? I am able to swallow pills fine. I just do them one at a time with a big sip of Water. If its morning I make sure I've had my tea or something hot to loosen up the band. I just recently quit my chewable vitamins for ones I could swallow too. Sorry this isn't ideas on how to crush them, but hope it helps.

I've actually halved or quartered them and nothing happened but then I read the horror story of one poster who's band slipped. I'll ask the doc on friday when i go for post op check up

I halve or quarter most of my tablets. I was able to get one in liquid form, which is just easier. One I take is a large capsule, which I empty onto a spoonful of ice cream every evening.

Are you sure you can crush the pills? Capsules and other pills are often designed to be time released. Pills that are scored can be cut, but it is my understanding that if they aren't scored then you shouldn't cut them. Just be careful.

A spoonfull of applesauce may help you get them down.

I halve or quarter my larger pills. The other day I absent mindely started chewing one of then - YUCK!

Check with your doctor if he can prescribe something smaller that will do the same thing. I use Claretin for my allergies, which comes in a very tiny pill that will actually melt on your tongue.

Good luck!

Thanks I may go back to halving or quartering.

Yes can crush them one is actually time released but doc said its ok to just spread them apart. The rest aren't.

I saw someone recommended applesauce. That always worked for my daughter when she didn't want to take "yucky" medicine. I haven't had to crush -- so far!

I just take mine...13 months post op, no problems. And some of my pills are huge.

OH and could you switch from allegra to zyrtec? It's LOTS smaller?

I have been worried about the pill crushing myself. I take several pills. I haven't even thought about the yucky taste, I was just worried about crushing and mixing so many pills/capsules.

My surgeon and nutritionist told me I would never be able to take whole pills ever again... so I'm going to be doing some crushing since I can't take liquid. I would say mixing with a little bit of yogurt or applesauce?

As a nurse, I can tell you that with my older patients, I used applesauce. Works well and it's good for you too.

Be careful about crushing pills. If they aren't scored or are enteric coated, don't crush them. Time release capsules shouldn't open either. Call you PCP and he might can change them for you.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
