Starting the Journey 30/f, Texas

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I am going to go speak to my primary care physician this Tuesday about lap band surgery. My background:

30 year old female

low blood pressure

low cholesterol

5'9 and 275 lbs

depression documented over the years due to weight fluctuations

out of breath when going up one flight of stairs (embarrassing!)

I was an athletic kid all growing up, then grad school I started packing on the pounds doing stress eating. I'm still in a stressful profession and I haven't lost the weight. I just yo yo diet. I walk in the evenings but when I'm done I just start eating when I get back. I think the Lap Band may force me to take this all seriously. I want to get to 160 eventually.

I'm looking for any tips in dealing with United HealthCare, how to approach my physician, referrals of doctors in the DFW area, and how to go about this with only my husband knowing (do not want work to find out, parents, etc.)

Hoping to meet and talk to you all further!

FortWorth

Hello!

As far as only your husband knowing, I think that's fairly simple. Tell only him! Other people may get suspicious, will try to nonchalantly as what you've been doing differently, etc but you only have to tell the people you want to tell. As far as work, I had to take medical leave and only had to list surgery as my reason, not specifically what type of surgery.

Hi FortWorth,

I'm right there with you...I told my family this past week, including my boyfriend and everyone is very supportive. Like you, I've always been athletic but could never get under that 180lb mark, since high school I've gained over 70lbs in the past 10 yrs. Not happy. I've yo yo dieted and it's not fun anymore. Hope you have a great journey! Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
