Help!! slim fast optima diarrhea

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I am a new member who is in the pre-op stage. This is my 4th day on the pre-op diet, with 9 days remaining.

My pre-op diet is to drink 3 slim fast optima and 1 Protein Shake (from the doctor's office) for the 1st 3 days. (now) and then to add one garden salad and take away one slim fast for the remainder.

My problem is that I started to feel nauseous after the 1st day, had diarrhea after the 2nd day, and the night of the 3rd day, I woke up with leg cramps (I think because of dehydration), diarrhea, and am somewhat nauseous.

I've done some research about the slim fast, and found that many people think the slim fast is too high in sugar, which causes the diarrhea, which can cause renal failure.

Ok, I know I should consult my doctor when they open on Monday, but I would like to hear about if you've had similar experiences.

(pss) I am going to drink lots more Water today...but I don't think that is enough of a solution.

liquids in, liquids out...... Very common! I would say that the pre op diet is a shock to everyones system considering how we were eating before pre op.

I really don't know if there's any way around it but it doesen't hurt to call.

Good luck

I am on day 7 of my pre-op- did not have any of those problems at all. What I am doing is not slim fast... I went to GNC and got shakes that are sugar free (Lean Body- chocolate Ice Cream flavor) my doctor said that the shakes need to contain min 15 grams of protein- they have 25 grams (keeps u fuller)

so I drink one for Breakfast, then drink 2 bottles of Water in between Breakfast and lunch, I also have one banana in this time as well, then lunch is a 2nd shake, and dinner is 6 oz of chicken or fish, veggies and small salad with ff dressing.

I could easily switch dinner for another shake- I have not felt hungry (except yesterday) this whole week. I have not had any bowel issues either....

I would up your intake of H2O and at the very least add a piece of fruit.< /p>

If your doctor's office is passing off a person as a Nutritionist and they arn't make sure your insurance company is not paying for that service and request a referral to a real one. This is a key person in your journey.

Good Luck!!!

(ps) I feel quite sure that the doctor will not speak to me, but that the "nutritionist" who is not a nutritionist will try to answer my questions.:confused:Help!:frown:

(pss) I am going to drink lots more Water today...but I don't think that is enough of a solution.

I would ask your doctor why you are on a high carb, high sugar, liquid diet to begin with. Seriously, ask them for studies showing that a high carb, high sugar, liquid diet is superior to a low carb, solid food, liver shrinking diet. Tell them you need references to the study that supports this is the best diet.

BTW, what are you talking about that drinking slim fast will cause renal failure?

Thanks so much for the reply and the good advice. After I began to feel to sick, dizzy, faint, bowel problems, and waking up in the middle of the night with severe leg cramps, I knew that I was dehydrated. I just did a key word search and found many posts about this and a few that had to go to the hospital, one with renal failure, and another just had to receive an IV to rehydrate.

I am going to ask my doctor if I can use another liquid drink. (I thought that Slim Fast was a liver shrinking diet...just becasue I figured that they knew best)...Thanks for the suggestions.

WOW, my preop diet is way different...pout pout pout!!!

On mine they have me drinking four 4oz Protein shakes an then 2 cups of no sugar added juice or skim milk, then unlimited amounts of broth, sugar free popsicles and sugar free Jello.

Just fyi many of the sugar free products have the side effect of diarrhea so have to be careful when consuming those...

Good luck on your surgery

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
