Trouble with artifical sweetners

Recommended Posts

I am having problems drinking the Protein Drinks because it seems everything has either nutrasweet or splenda. They both give me awful headaches and make me feel like crap. My surgeon said to just keep drinking them and my body would get used to it. Um...No just can't. I've stopped taking my pain meds for pain now only have to take them if I drink a Protein shake. That's not how it's supposed to work. Any suggestions?

My surgery was 6/4/09.

Start weight 290 5/4/09

Day of surgery weight 273

Todays weight 6/8/09 268

You have a couple of options. There are unflavored (unsweetened) Protein powders that you can mix with whatever you want. I also just did a Google search and came up with several Protein powders sweetened with stevia (a natural non-toxic sweetner.) You can also check for one sweetened with ogliofructose (chicory root) which is also a natural sweetner.

Good Luck!

Now whey Protein isolate powder, it has no artifical sweetners, just whey protein, and a little soy lecithin. You can add Stevia powder, in most health food stores and even in the health food aisles now at the local supermarket. I like to mix frozen strawberries, frozen banannas, or frozen berry mix {from Sam's Club} & a little Water and whirr it up on high in my blender. Very good. You can get the powder by Now online at the Vitamin Shoppe for a good deal, I have 5 lbs. of the unflavored, which tastes similar to malted milk powder.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
