Metformin after surgery

Recommended Posts

I am hoping to be approved for my lap band surgery soon. I met with the dietician today and we discussed my Metformin. I take 1500 mg per day and have for two years. I had a bad reaction to the regular Metformin (violent vomiting) and they switched me to extended release. I have had not problems with it.

I know I cannot crush the extended release pills, but she said she does not think there is a liquid. Evenif there is, I may not tolerate it.

At a seminar I went to, a person who was taking Metformin told me that her doctor just took her off it because she was controlled as soon as she started the liquid diet and taking in lots of Protein.< /p>

Anybody have experience with this?

I took Metformin for five years before WLS. It worked well to control my PCOS for the first three years but the weight came back and the cycle slowed down again after that.

I went off the MetforminER on my own right after surgery because I couldn't swallow pills. Within two weeks my cycle came after a three month hiatus. I saw my Endo about a month after surgery and told him I went off the Met. He told me to come back in 4 months and he would do some bloodwork. I did and by then there were no signs of PCOS through bloodwork or symptoms. My cycle has been 28-days ever since surgery and my other symptoms are pretty much gone.

I do watch my carbs though and of course that has a lot to do with controlling PCOS. After surgery I completely cut out white carbs.

I went back on the Met just here recently and all I have to say is I can't do MET at all it drops my sugar so low and I get dizzy alot! I stopped taking it. I took my sugar the other day and it was 99 that is low for me. I went back on it for PCOS to get my cycle and I didn't give it enough time I guess because I didn't get AF. I am waiting this month after I stopped it to see if she will show up if not I guess I will use Natural Progestrone Cream to bring a cycle on for get MET!! LOL!!! That was rant huh, sorry didn't mean to hijack your post.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
