preop liquid HEADACHE

Recommended Posts

Is a real bad headache common with the liquid stage?

I was only at 770 calories yesterday. So today I'm going for the 1000.

As far as medication goes, like advil, tylenol, how long before the surgery should you stop taking that stuff?

I got my sleep apnea machine yesterday, so last night was my first night with it. Perhaps thats why I feel so dizzy and crummy this morning.

I suffered with a headache for the first 2 days of liquids. It does get better and the liquid diet is over before you know it. I was allowed to take tylenol until midnight before the surgery and they gave me something in my IV for the headache the morning of surgery. (it was from lack of sleep) I do reccomend getting some liquid tylenol (they make adult strength) if you think the liquids are going to continue to give you headaches as it is not reccomended to take pills right after surgery. Best of luck to you, I know being banded is the best thing I have done for my health. ~Mandy

The liquid diet is essentially a form of detox but in this instance it is used for other purposes. So the headaches is your bodies way of telling you it is mad at you for depriving it of what it normally eats. Think of this headache as a "good" thing. All that icky stuff is being flushed out of your bodies.

Liquid Tylenol works great for it. Also drinking LOTS of Water. Fresh clean Water.

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea a year ago. It is very common to have headaches while adjusting to the CPAP. You feel lousy often after using the CPAP. Hang in there, though, it gets better if you can tough it out. Then you won't want to sleep without it!

Thanks!

I didn't know that now I couldn't take regular pills. I'm on antidepressants and BP meds and a few others, Should I not take them now?

Hi Sunsett,

You're going to want to call your doctor's office to find out which medications you should stop and when. Some medications thin your blood and it's important not to take them for a certain time before surgery. Check with your doc to be sure.

I also experienced headaches during the liquid phase, and I wasn't on a sleep apnea machine. I think it was my body wondering where they daily dose of sugar was.

Good luck with your prep - the surgery will be here before you know it!

With all medications you should double check with your doctor, but with antidepressants and BP meds it is important that you maintain the blood levels of both meds. But again double check with your doctor.

Thanks!

I can jump on board with you that the pre-op liquid stage headaches are a pain.

For me it was partially a detox of caffeine too.

I have also had these same annoying headaches now that I'm post-op liquids...... I've heard of many many people with these same symptoms....they do go away...

:-) yeahhhhhhh

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
