Nightime Cough/Must Sit Up

Recommended Posts

My husband and I were banded over a year ago. About a month ago, he started coughing really hard in the night. He said it feels like stuff is creeping back up into his throat in the night and making him cough, sometimes he coughts up food. He tried eating/drinking nothing for several hours before bed but it didn't help. He used Maalox and it worked for a couple of weeks, but it has started again. They only way he gets relief is to sit up in the chair. The man has spent the last three nights sitting in a chair trying to get a decent night's sleep. Any ideas?

it sounds like reflux, he should really talk to the DR. maybe his band is too tight and needs an unfill.

good luck!

I just went for my first fill this past Tuesday. My nurse and my doctor mentioned that if for any reason I could not get anything down, had trouble swallowing, or starting coughing in the middle of the night, to call and come back in as soon as I could. I believe your husband's coughing is a sign of the band being too tight. Please call your doctor.

The night time cough is a primary symptom that GERD is a problem. That "stuff creeping into his throat" is stomach contents....reflux of stomach acid, partially digested food. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease is no laughing matter. It can erode the esophagus to the point that it damages cell growth and can cause cancer. I have a friend to ignored reflux for years and this guy who maybe weighs 140 pounds lost a portion of his esophagus and most of his stomach to cancer as a result.

So maybe it's nice to not be able to eat much and see the pounds really fall off, BUT this is a huge reason to go back to the doctor for an unfill. Sometimes an unfill of as little as .2cc will fix the problem.

Another potential problem would be a hiatial hernia. I had the same problem at night and when I had a swallow study done, they discovered a hiatial hernia at the bottom of my esophagus. I was already scheduled for the band and my surgeon fixed the hernia during the surgery. Two for the price of one!

I would suggest a swallow study be done if the situation continues. They are very easy and you have immediate results.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
