Advice on picking surgery date

Recommended Posts

I am so excited; have been approved by insurance company which was only 1 week wait (well that is after they received all the hoop info they req'd) - surprised. I have my all day pre-op orientation May 13th and will get my surgery date then. I am looking for advice from everyone on this: I figure 2 weeks liquid pre-op diet any other tests puts me at the end of May. Our family is flying to Disney World June 24th for 1 week. So.... if they have availability say between June 1 - 12th, would you have the surgery that soon b4 vacation? Or would you schedule after July 4th (we return July 2nd)? I wouldn't think I would have such a hard time deciding, but as we all know it has been almost one year (July 29th) since my first step on this journey. I apprecieate any info/advice you can give me!

Well, I would do it as early as possible. What is your doctor's policy post-op for eating....how long on liquids, how long on mushy foods, and then to solids? I wouldn't want to be on mushy foods on vacation because it would just be difficult to keep finding things you can have and to carry the stuff you couldn't find in the park.

I am still in the pre-op phase, but I think I would wait until after vacation. Just in case there were any complications after surgery.

Good luck to you on your upcomimg surgery and congrats! I am 10 months post-op and I would definitely recommend you wait until you get back from vacation. It will be difficult for you to be on mushies while away and you'll want to completely follow your post-op diet. Go and enjoy yourself and then when you get back, it will be your time to focus completely on yourself. Good luck!

Lisa :)

Same advice here--Mine was 1/14 exactly two weeks after New Years, nothing going on, no holidays no vacations nothing.

I didn't have to cook for any occasion or go anywhere where I wasn't exactly sure what I could eat. Just a lot less stress.

Totally enjoy yourself, have a big ol' Mickey pancake and refocus when you get back

I'd agree and wait until after vacation. That's what I did. I got back from Hawaii on Jan. 12 and started pre op diet Jan. 13 and had surgery Jan. 27. I was more than READY to begin my journey. Enjoy your trip and you'll be even more successful when you do have surgery. Linda

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
