rheumatoid Arthritis and the band

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. I was banded in july 08 and was just diagnosed as having rheumatoid arthritis. I am concerned because some of the medications for the RA I will not be able to take because of the band. Anyone else out there who is in the same boat as I am? I informed my Dr. about the band and she seemed to be informed about medication problems. I am just concerned that the meds I need to take I won't be able too and I will suffer because of it. I need my hands and fingers to work since it is my livelyhood. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Dee, so sorry about the diagnosis.... I know it has to be a pretty big road block. But, the other side is at least you know what is causing your problems. I think you need to talk to your doctor some more. NSAIDs aren't really the first line of treatment for RA as far as I know. My dear friend who has it and gotten the most consistent relief and return to normalcy from an injectable. And even NSAIDs are likely available in injectible form. So you need to sit down for a serious discussion about treatment options.

Dee.....I realize you posted this several years ago but guess what.....I am in the same boat! I have been taking NSAIDS along with prenisone until we figured out RA meds. I am going back and forth between both doctors. Have you had success???? I hope you see this!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
