How long were you on the pre-op diet for?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if everyone is on the pre-op diet for a set amount of time or if the doctor creates a schedule for each individual.

I did 12 days of Optifast and 2 days of Clear Liquids only. My surgeon's standard protocol.

I had a 2 week Liver Shrink Diet, it was high Protein with No Sugar Added Carnation Instant Breakfast, High Protein Slimfast, 97% deli meat, whole wheat bread and yogurt. Lost about 18 lbs. This is the norm for my surgerical group.

I have not been advised that I would be on a liquid diet yet. I have been told that I need to lose 10% of my body weight prior to surgery. I went to the group nutrition class where we were told that we should have 60 to 80 grams of lean Protein a day and should drink 48-64oz of liquid a day. We were also given food journals. And told to track everything we eat including time of day, amounts, calories, protein grams, and ounces of liquid. Maybe I will get a more specific plan when have my one-on-one w/ the nutritionist on Monday. The whole liquid diet for a week or more sounds pretty rough. I hope I don't have to do that.

Every Dr follows their own protocal.

No pre-op diet for me, just had to eat light the day before surgery (but I had the insurance required 6mnth Dr monitored weightloss routine I lost 24lbs in that time period).

Thanks everyone for your advice. If I go ahead with the surgery, I think I will do a pre-op diet even though the doctor said I didn't need to. It can't hurt, right?

My doctor said he doesn't insist that women do the liquid diet (he does for men because of the difference in liver size or placement or something..) he did say he could not operate on one woman because her liver was too large - so he said it was up to me, he thought it was a good idea but wouldn't force me. So I'm doing Atkins Advantage for Breakfast and lunch, and a green salad for dinner with skinless chicken breast - a total of 502 calories, lol. I had 540 the first day but switched to a lighter dressing, 2 tbsp of light ranch. You can't believe how happy I am to see that salad at night!!! I started the diet three days ago, 8 days to go!

But the bottom line here was I've gone through too much to have a fatty liver stand in my way!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
