Classical Singing/Opera

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry if there was a better place to post this, but here is goes... :glare:

I am 23 and currently in school training to be an opera singer (I still have a really long way to go). I am a little worried about how the weight loss is going to effect my voice. I was wondering if anyone out there is a singer or aspiring singer and has had this done...? I know that my voice will change but because I am younger I will most likely have the time to "fix" anything that happens, well, to a point. I know that everyone is different to...

I see what happened to Deborah Voight and what she went through. Granted she is much older but she did have to take a year off to retrain her entire voice, but she also had the bypass. This is the only thing that is keeping me from feeling really good about the surgery.

Any advice or thoughts are greatly apprecieated...

As far as I know Deborah Voight did not have to go through retraining like that after her bypass. She says she has to pay a little bit more attention to her techniques at times, but that the weight loss has greatly helped her breathing and stamina. She said she had no negative effects on her voice from the bypass.

I wouldn't worry about it. You'll adjust your technique as you lost the weight, if you even need to. I think losing the weight will be far more important in the long run, don't you?

I have sang all my life. Losing weigh will not affect your voice. Like Bethany said you will find that you have alot more breath support as your body doesn't have to support all the fat. lol Of couse exercise helps that. Don't worry--be happy!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
