Hey all,

I am in the initial stages of deciding to move forward with LapBand surgury. I am almost 44 years old (guy) and weight about 310lbs. I guess my decision is, am I fooling myself about losing the weight on my own? I did do Jenny Craig, which worked great. I got down to 255 in about 7 months, but as soon as I stopped, went right back to were I was. I think what got me was that I lost almost 60lbs and still was not even half way to my goal. Very discouraging....Anyway, just wanted to say Hi to everyone and really enjoy this site. There seems to be sooo much great info. Take care and wish me luck.

Welcome to LBT! Definitely GOOD LUCK with what every you decide. I myself am just 3 months post-op, and still believe this is the best decision I have ever made!!

I have tried pretty much every diet from Atkins to Weight Watchers! The most I was ever able to lose on my own was 50 lbs, and that was incredibly hard! But like you, as soon as I stopped them I gained everything back.

I think what sold me the most on the Lap Band was that it was a tool that I could use for a lifetime. For the most part I eat what I want, but A LOT LESS (probably a third of what I used to eat). The band stops you from overeating.

Having LB surgery is definitely not the end all cure all, you can certainly eat around it. So things are not easy, but this is definitely a tool to help with the weight loss process!

Again good luck with your journey, and welcome!

I can only speak from my experience. About 5 or 6 years ago I got very big. I actually lost 165lbs the old fashioned way. Eating right and exercising. I only kept it off a short time and fell into the same bad habits. I ended up gaining 115lbs of it back. This time my health was actually worse than before. I decided I needed help and chose the lap band. The reason I choose WLS is because I want to make it a permanent thing. I want to enjoy life and stop worrying about my weight all the time. I am too young for that. So the decision was an easy one for me. Especially since someone close to me had LB surgery and did very well. Good luck and remember it won't be easy but once you get there, WOW! it feels great. I am getting closer to my goal and with out a doubt in my mind I will get to my goal. Determination is my middle name! Good Luck:thumbup:

Thanks for you encouraging words. It seems comforting in a way, when you talk to people who understand what it is like. I will do my best!

Hey Bearbandit,

You did really well. It is pretty good motivation for us newbee's. Actually, my sister had it done and she did very well. I scheduled my first meeting for next week and asked her to join me!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
