For those of you that have not had a fill yet, but are past the liquids and mushies, what are you eating? I notice I have little restirction, but that I need to ensure that I chew well. While I am eating way, way less than I did before the surgery, the scale is not moving. I am just wondering what everyone in this stage is eating, and whether you continue to lose weight?

Hi I am also from NJ - Nice to meet you. I am about 2.5 weeks out of surgery and eating mushies still and some food but chewing everything until I can't chew it anymore just to be safe.

i do not feel restriction either at this point. From what I understand this time is called bandster hell and is for healing rather then losing weight. I think you get a first fill 4 or 5 weeks out of surgery so I still have a while.

The first week after surgery I lost about 14 pounds but nothing since and I understand this is normal to.

Just hang in their until your first fill but continue to make good food choices. Protein Shakes, puree food and any kind of healthy food you can keep chewing to a puree consistancy

Jacks is correct, you are officially in Bandster Hell (and it sucks!). You will likely not lose any weight until your first fill which is usually 6 weeks post op. The six weeks is for your body to heal and your stomach to figure out the the H*** you just did to it :mad2:

Your body goes into a starvation mode as it doesn't know how to react to the massive changes going on. In fact (don't freak out) you could gain weight, which again is totally normal.

You will be swollen for awhile and retain Water, even though eating almost nothing but don't get discouraged. My best advice is to stay OFF the scale for at LEAST a month.

Post op I ate cottage cheese and mashed potatoes for awhile but then needed Protein so ate the canned corned beef hash (NOT a good choice, high in fat, but I needed it BAD)'

Just keep exercising and doing what you're suppose to be doing, the weight will come off, but don't count on losing ANYTHING for at least a month.

I am past that stage but I can still provide input. I ate lean meats, mainly white meat chicken & fish and fresh veggies. Egg Beaters is lowfat, low cal and high Protein and not bad if you add some veggies and a little lowfat cheese. oatmeal cooked in lowfat milk is good but without a fill might not be filling enough.

You are in bandster hell (period between going on solids and getting adjustments) so you should not be expected to lose weight at this point. I was able to keep from gaining but did not lose much. My surgeon was pleased with that though and said many of his patients gain back 5-10 pounds during this stage.

When the fills come you will start to see a difference, it may take a couple fills but be patient and it will happen.

I'm a new banister done 2/9/09 I'm just try to concentrate on healing. but I'm having problems keeping myself from eating, the temptation gets in my way. I guess what they told me was true there will be demons to work through and everybody has there own they have to battle. WoW harder then I thought. I can't wait for the first fill. I only lost 8pd and was felling like I failed once again, I read, most of this was normal at first so my minds a little as ease. Hang in there :mad2: I'm sure going to I'm tired of carrying around this extra weight, God Bless you

I was also banded 02/09/09... And next week I get my first fill... not all that excited... still a week of dieting to do.. But I know how you fill (corny I meant feel but that is what I typed). Anyhow, in the Morning I typically eat a bowl of Cereal (Found some SBD cereal w/ 8grams of Protein and around 100 cals per cup) with a cup of milk... it goes down to me like mushies since I chew it well. But that by itself is about 16g of prtn. I always take atleast 2 cheesesticks w/me to work (reduced fat and they are 8g of protein each also... that's another 16). lunch is typically very well cooked chicken or something else of that sort that I know I can get a good amount of protein from. dinner, depends on how I feel, sometimes a shake (I do this for Breakfast alot too). The shake will have atleast 1 cup of milk(8) 1 scoop of Protein Powder (11-20something g of protein) and 1 scoop of evaporated milk (around 2-4g of protein depending on the spoon lol).

But just hang in there.I have been doing pretty good, I have lost about 6lbs since surgery but it has been a serious work in progress during this testiy time.

I guess I just try to keep our little credo/anthem ringing in my head... protein first!

You guys are great. Thanks for the input. I thought I would start a continuous weight lose from the date of surgery, but I see that is not really the case. I feel better now. I'll just keep watching my calories, watching my carbs, and wait for my first fill. Looks like many people need a few fills before they hit the "sweet spot." At least I know I am on my way!

      On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
      Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

      Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
