Cheapest option in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I know cheapest is not the best, but i am so exhausted, i just got approved for 5k, and i can put in $1000 from pocket + air travel from toronto to Mexico.

Is there any one in Mexico who can do LAP BAND for this amount?

Sorry but i just feel very frustrated with the whole process of financing.

Thanks

There are some guys who do the band out of Emmanuel Medical Center for your price, but they are less than fully competent, as far as statistics and certifications are concerned. And for that price, you will probably NOT receive an FDA approved band, but rather a French or Swedish band, which will complicate your aftercare significantly. Also, you must research where you will be getting aftercare post-surgery and the cost involved. If the cost is that much of a factor, how are you going to afford fills? You must expect at least 4 fills until you get proper restriction, and that does not include unfills or other follow-up you will undoubtedly need post-op. These are all considerations you should be taking into account. Hope that helps.

Yikes -- plan to spend 10K! My doctor was Dr. Roberto Rumbaut in Monterrey and he is fantastic. The people at NYU (where I do my follow-up) know him and he has a great reputation. You're paying someone to cut you and put something around your stomach -- this is not the time to look for a bargain!

Best of luck to you!

Caterine 55 is right on the money---- go to her doctor-- at least you can talk to someone who has used him-- where will you go for follow up visits and if you have a problem

spend the money --- in the long run, you will be glad

I am going with Doctor Kirshenbaum in Denver for just under 10,000.00 (US). His fills are just 15.00 after the first three months, too. I've lived in Mexico, and I think the medical care is good in most places. However, once you cross borders, you have a whole other set of liability and accountability issues that you have to deal with. Mexico does not have the same rigorous monitoring of their medical practices as we have in the US, and from what I remember of having lived in Canada as a teen. Don't get me wrong...there are some places that are very well monitored. It's just that it's not that way everywhere. Also, I am not sure what the rate of exchange is. I think the dollar is close to the loonie now, am I right? I hope you find a resource that will work for you. Good luck.

I am in Texas and the best I could find is $13,500 and I am paying for it! And let me tell ya to find these funds we are wipeing us all out. And we have a big family. But he is close and has a good reputation and well the fills are free for life and this includes working with a nutricanist.

I am familiar with Mexico and have had dental work there and it was done wonderfully and I will be going back for more at a later date. But, I went to someone that was recommend by friends not just anyone.

I do know that in Montery Mexico a friend of a friend had Gastro bypass some yrs back and it went well for her. But to be honest Lap band is a different procedure all together and I do not think they have enough experience to do it.

I wish you all the best. Please be careful.

If you go for the cheapest in Mexico you are going to put your health and perhaps your life at risk.

There are reputable Mexican surgeons that charge around $7500-$8000 the last time I checked. Surgery is not an area to go with the lowest price!

Gastric bypass is a MUCH more invasive surgery than Lap-Band and some docs in MX have been doing it for much longer than American doctors. You must do your research though, and not pick some guy because of price... A really low price means they are cutting corners somewhere, and cutting corners somewhere is NOT something you want to do with your health...

I would take your tax return and put more into it like everyone is saying.

You have fills after surgery, if you go to Mexico for instance i know Kaiser will NOT work those bands. A lot of drs feel that way. Plus, sometimes the ports are put in funky and you will have to get a removal (pay cash again)...

Just find a reputable dr here and there is another health credit card you can get in the states.

Iam sure you dont want to give mexico all your money then have problems and have to pay the big bucks to get it removed, then pay for the hospital stay...

Hello to everyone. This is my first ever post. I am scheduled to be banded on March 16, 2009. I had been thinking about it for a while when i ran into an old friend who got it. She looked great and was extremely excited about her results for such a short time. The hook for me was the price. Her surgeon is having a promotion until the end of February which includes everything (pre op testing and labs) for $7500. The Hospital, anethesia, Surgeon, and labs. The only thing that was not included was the sleep study I had to take, but I was diagnosed with major sleep apnea so that makes it well worth the extra cost and it is covered by my insurance. I live on the Border to Mexico and you couldn't pay me to get it in Mexico. It is way too dangerous out there and I don't mean the surgery! I'm including the link: South Texas Bariatric & Metabolic Institute - Laredo, TX - Home

I have been reading a lot of posts and you all are an inspiration and a great reference center.

Thanks, Coach and welcome. It's true about some of the border cities. They can be VERY rough. I don't think that is true of all of Mexico, though. Having lived in Guadalajara and traveled extensively by myself throughout the southern states, I think the border cities give us an uncharacteristic view of the Mexican people and their culture, don't you? For example, I won't go to Tj, but I never felt cause to be overly concerned about my safety in Jalisco or Michoacan. A person can receive excellent medical care in Mexico, sometimes better than we provide here, but it is not guaranteed, and you have NO legal recourse like you have here. I think, though, our original poster is Canadian, am I right? As a Canadian, you would still have legal recourse under our system to hold a doc accountable if you choose to have surgery in the US...but it's costly....

As I respect everyone's feelings on this I was just as desperate as far as money goes and being self pay.I took the chance with Dr.Pompa and had a great experience.Maybe I am just the lucky one but I paid $6500 and another $500 something airfare for two and $200 for the Hilton for two nights.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
