Looking Forward to Lap Band - Just wonder if I can stop my love affair with food.

Recommended Posts

I met with my Dr. at the VA Hospital yesterday and received the good news that Lap Band Surgery will become available at this facility in April or May. I will be given an opportunity to be a candidate for the procedure if I meet certain criteria, the first of which is to lose 5% of my current weight which is 333 lbs during the next 6 months. I know I can do this, I have in the past. There are other criteria that are probably not unlike what most of you have been through, i.e. meetings with shrinks, dieticians and physical therapy. While I am excited about the prospect of LBS I just wonder what I am going to do with my love affair with food, the buying, cooking, inviting folks over and the over indulging? I just hope and pray that I can learn to be happy with a few bites of this and that and not feel the need to over indulge. Talk to me if you have had similar concerns about leaving your past relationship with food. Thanks, art, a friend of Jesus.

If feel sure you can do this -- or, put another way, if I can do this, ANYONE can! :cursing: I am three weeks post surgery and find all is going well. I have also had to deal with the "growling stomach" syndrome (see a previous post) but every day it seems to get better. I just ate a very very smal bowl of mashed potatoes [made with Smart Balance butter substitute and Milk-Plus (high protein) milk] and not only was I full, it tasted better than ANY mashed potatoes I've ever had.

This is not to say it has been or will be a complete 'bed of roses" -- but you seemed determined, you seem to have a religion to rely on, and now you also have members of this chat room for support. YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
