Insurance with exclusion BCBS NJ

Recommended Posts

My employer is thinking of changing health benefits. As employees we currently choose between BCBS Horizon or Traditional Plan. I currently have BCBS NJ Horizon (PPO Direct Access). There is no weight loss exclusion on my current plan. I am told that they are eliminating the Traditional Plan and everyone will be on Horizon. Here is the concern: some people are saying that our present BCBS Horizon coverage could change. Does anyone know if there is actually a BCBS NJ Horizon plan that has a weight loss exclusion. I should be ready for approval for lap band in May. I can't imagine all of a sudden having a new policy with an exclusion. Are there actually alot of plans out there with weight loss exclusions.

All plans include weight loss surgery. However, riders are often added to the plans to EXCLUDE WLS. It depends on your employers preferences. Every employer my husband and I have ever had, have had exclusions for WLS. You can always call BCBS and have them look up your plan and find out if it is included.

When is open enrollment for your insurance? I think most companies have theirs in November and new benefits begin Jan 1 of the next year. If you beneift year is Jan 1 - Dec 31 then you would be covered through 2009 so as long as you have the surgery this year you are fine.

Why don't you ask your benefits administrator if they are going to start excluding WLS when they change plans?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
