hi kap -

can i ask who's doing your surgery? i am a self pay and plan to go to mexico later this month for a band. i have done a lot of research (for 2 months) and have uncovered good and bad information about particular surgeons in Tijuana.< /p>

would be glad to share if you're interested. i know some people don't want to hear anyhting negative once they have chosen their surgeon and facility. just let me know. i understand either way. =)

best of luck!

My wife was banded By Dr. Kuri about 4 years ago

We have been very happy with his service and after care.

I am self employed and insured so we paid the cost of the surgery.

At that time lap band was new in the States and we found the cost ran from 25,000 to 40,000.

So we saved quite a chunk of change by going to Mexico.

The care is excellent, we would not hesitate to do so again.

We found the post operation care( fills and support) also excellent.

My wife has lost over 100 lbs. and still losing though slower now.

I am so proud of her!

Note: we live about 2 hours drive away, and now we go to TJ just for a special weekend once in awhile.

Hey Guys, thanks for the info and support. yea, 7500 too.

good price on a flight from Buffalo airport, half the cost of what Toronto's YYZ costs. To be honest I don't know that name of the Doc. who will be performing the surgery, I feel stupid now for not asking. I haven't received anything from the clinic yet, I assume it'll be on the paperwork they send. Wow 2 weeks! I will start the pre op liquid love in Friday!

Good luck Mexico-Bandsters!

kap-

i urge you to find out the name of your surgeon. it's so important to do your homework on this issue before you sign anything. i almost committed to go with a surgeon and clinic that have really bad statistics for infection and erosion. actually, the doctor i was interested in has several unhappy customers that post on here frequently.

there is a guideline on this website that has been very helpful to me in my search for just the right doctor and hospital. it was written by wasabubblebutt (screen name) and is called "how to research a mexican surgeon." it might help you, too.

i wish you all the best.

I don't have "one" place in mind for fills, I have a few options- Ottawa, Troy Michigan and one place in Toronto, but I'm still not certain they'll do Mexico bandsters.

kap - you are so welcome!

i opened that document in microsoft word and modified it to fit my specific needs/questions. then i emailed it to three surgeon's offices that i was interested in and they filled in the blanks themselves!

when i got the results back i pretty much had my answers. it was so helpful. if you want my version already laid out in table form you are welcome to it. just email me at crickpoodle@yahoo.com

i'm so glad you are researching your doc before you go. because, wow, there are some super scary stories out there! 8)

i'm shooting for my mexican band at the end of january, too. yeah!!

Congrats! I'm in Guatemala (live in LA) scheduled for Lap Band on Jan 29th. I am living here for about 6 months, but found my doctor through AngelsAbroad.com. The price is 1/2 of what it is in the states. My doc is American Board cert and practiced in US for several years. I will keep you all posted post-op on care, etc. So far so good. Private hospital that seems nicer than many I've been to around Los Angeles.

which doctor are you going to?

Yah - I was sooooooo excited too! You will be happy u made this life decision. Its still a lot of work though! So be prepared! Hope everything goes as great for you as it has for me!

Have u started your pre-op diet yet? I found that the most difficult - but stuck to it pretty good. I am lower bmi - so I had to do two shakes and a light meal at dinner and I found that hard! Jeesh - Im a wimp!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
