Boxing/Karate 2nd time asking, please advise

Recommended Posts

Now that I am full of energy, I was debating joing a boxing gym or Karate. I am not sure how smart of an idea that would be with the port and band. Anyone out there currently do the above clubs?

Happy Holidays!!!

Greg

Once you are healed you should not have any problems with performing any type of exercise. If you were to feel discomfort talk to your doctor.

I took karate before and LOVED it!! (Pre-surgery, in college, when I was about the same weight... however, after their workouts, I could do 100 sit ups, 100 push ups, 100 leg lifts, etc! I felt SO in shape, even though I was still heavy!!)

There is a karate studio within walking distance of my house and I am thinking about going there. You should be able to do karate, but I don't think you want to risk getting punched in the gut while boxing!!

In karate they won't really punch you hard! And, if you are in a place that does contact, they will be able to work with you not getting punched in the stomach.

I say YES to karate, NO to boxing... but talk to your doctor too!

I do muy thai, kickboxing and boxing. Most of the workout should be cardio in nature. I did spar a bit 2 weeks after surgery but I had on a big muy thai ab sheild. I had no problems. Kicking was interesting (abs are sued a bit in high kicks and rotation). Doc said after 2 weeks cardio is fine and after 1st month go for it.

I still haven't done an ab workout or grappling yet. I want to see how things go and start slow. Since the holidays are here I'll probably wait till after the 1st.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
