Do you think I broke my band?

Recommended Posts

Maybe I'm just here for moral support, hopefully someone will turn a sympathetic ear my way. Here goes...

I was banded in May 2007, at the time I weighed 330 lbs. By September 2007 I had lost 90 lbs and weighed 240 lbs. I never got a fill because I was losing weight so good, I figured I'd wait till I needed it. Then I got pregnant...

Over the course of the pregnancy I gained a whopping 10 lbs, but when I weighed myself a week after baby I weighed 235. I had the baby in May 2008. The story is sounding good so far, right?

Over the past 6 months I have not gotten a fill and some lbs have crept back on. I now weigh about 253. I know I need to schedule a fill but, I'm scared! :rolleyes2:

I've never had one and I'm paranoid now that all my regular eating over pregnancy and the past six months has broken the band... you know - a flipped port that's somehow infected plus a stretched pouch and all sorts of things I have made up in my head. I just keep thinking it won't work or something is going to be wrong..

Any words of motivation so I can call and schedule my fill? My goal is to get to 200 lbs, although 180 would be really nice.

Thanks for listening...

Maryum

Relax. You dont eat yourself into "breaking your band" without some significant discomfort and the side effects of overeating such as vomiting. An unfilled band lets you eat pretty normally, as you probably need to do during pregnancy.

Also, slipped or eroded bands cause significant discomfort and problems. You'd probably know.

Dont be scared of having a fill, its a (usually) pretty painless procedure that takes a few minutes. Just take it easy after as you'll be learning to eat like a bandster again.

Your band is in there and ready to work, good luck with it!

Hi Jacqui:

I get nervous thinking I've broken this amazing devise or more likely myself when I get pain near the port. Do you know what the current stats are on percentage of people who have flipped their band or had slippage? thank you in advance.

You are newly banded, you are still in the healing stage so It's normal to feel some pain at the port right now.

Wow Maryum....that was a lot to take in. You did amazingly well during your pregnancy. Good job! I never did THAT well.

Please don't stress over this. My experience with fills, are completely painless. If you did anything to hurt your band, you probably would be in pain. Stretched your pouch? Maybe a little. A fill will give you a little restriction and if you go on liquids for a few days after the fill, it will get you back on track.

A word of advice... don't be so eager for restriction that you allow them to give you too much. If you felt restriction and lost that much without ever having a fill, you stomach is probably sensitive to them. I know mine is. I lost almost 30lbs before my first fill and each fill I only allow them to put in 1cc. This last one (my 2nd) really kicked up the restriction. I probably won't get another for several months.

Good Luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
