Breast Reduction - Will I be happy?

Recommended Posts

Hello Ladies,

I had my Tummy Tuck 10 weeks ago and am now starting to think about doing a breast reduction. I am not afraid of the surgery, but want to ask those of you who have had this procedure a very important question - after you're healed, do you have normal sensations in the breasts? If there is a big problem with numbness, I don't know if I would do the surgery. I worry about this not just for my sex life, but also how it will feel in and out of my bras, bathing suits, etc.

Thanks for replying.

Katja

I'd like to hear what people say about this too. I went from a 38G (DDD) and I am now a 32 F (DDD) - so no major reduction in my breast size and one is bigger than the other now. I am concerned about numbness also is it absolutely a ridiculous thing to do before having kids? I plan to do that in the next 4-6 years.

Well ladies - I have to say that next to my band, my breast reduction was the best thing I could have had done. I went from a 44F/G to a 40DD. It was not a drastic jump because I was still somewhat heavy and Dr. did not want me to be out of proportion. I had no loss in sensation to the breasts and after completely healing , you should go to a specialty shop and be measured for a good fitting bra.. you will look fabulous if you have on the right undergarment. with the reduction I also got a lift. so ' the girlz" were standing at attention even without a bra.. I felt like Zena Warrior Princess - lol - Good luck

I didn't have a reduction but I had a lift 4 weeks ago which took me from a DDD/E to a D. I actually have WAY more sensation before. I'm really hoping that some of the sensation goes away because I'm too tender, especially now that it's getting cold out.

I too am 4 weeks post op from a breast lift and Tummy Tuck. I would absolutely do the breast lift! I was a 38G before I was banded, last time I was fitted I was a 34DD. I'm still wearing sports bras, so I don't know my new size, but I would think it's about the same, they just are back where they belong! Sensation doesn't seem to be a problem and recovery has been a breeze!

I had one 4 years ago. Best thing I ever did. Never realized how much my back hurt until it did not hurt any more. Removed 5 lbs from each side. They look the same whether I wear a bra or not (wonderful lift!). It is so nice to buy shirts that fit instead of having to buy them larger too fit around my chest.

Did not loose any sensitivity and you can barely see the scars. My scars were white at 6 months. I choose a plastic surgeon that came highly recommended from women that have had reconstructive surgery from breast cancer. I could not be happier with the end result.

I had the reduction and lift but only on one, cancer got the other. Sensenation is fine, but....they grow back!!! Yep, it's been about 5 years and noticed last week that it is larger than the reconstructed one. A friend had told me hers grew back but I thought naaaaaaa. Well I was wrong. Since I am working on getting a lapband, I will deal with the girlz later.:)

Side note - I would hold off on the breast reduction until after you have achieved most of your weight loss goal. they are going to shrink anyway and you do not want to end up out of proportion with your new figure. After a good amount of weight loss. you may not need a reduction - just a lift!

I agree with Kelvinsmom. I had a breast reduction several years ago, then gained a lot of weight. I had my LapBand done in October 2007 and, after having lost 61 pounds, I may need a breast augmentation! Isn't that crazy?!?

When you have your plastic surgery consultation, ask the surgeon if he does a pedicle flap or a free nipple graft technique. The pedicle flap should not reduce any nipple sensation since the nipple is not removed from the breast during the reduction. My reduction was this type and I have had no problems with lack of sensation. The free nipple graft technique actually removes the nipple for a short time before suturing it back on: I understand there is a chance for varying degrees of sensation afterwards.

As with all surgeries, don't hesitate to ask your surgeon anything and everything!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
