All I had to do was go to the Dr. for 6 months to be weighed. I needed to lose 20lbs for them to submit my insurance. I only lost 15 and my insurance approved it.

CIGNA Insurance required the 6 month doctor supervised. They are looking at whether or not you can commit to something. They did not require that I lose weight (thank goodness b/c I gained). The whole purpose was to make sure that I committed myself to 6 months of counseling with my physician. In other words, that I could stick to something!!! Each month they weighed me and I briefly spoke to my doctor about exercise, tips in reducing calories, and just general lap-band Q&A. He then signed all the forms given to me by my surgeon each month. I had to pay out of pocket ($100) each visit as insurance doesn't cover this! At the end of 6 monthly visits, I turned the forms in to my surgeon's office. I've been banded 5 weeks now and I would go through the whole process again -- it is SOOOOO worth it to get your insurance to pay. As far as the psychologist and nutritionist go, that was one visit each for about 30 minutes and they took care of faxing over their report to my surgeon. Easy! If I can do it ANYBODY can, believe me.

I have Cigna also and did the 6 month diet. You see your doctor at the beginning of the first month to get your starting weight. Then you go back at the end of each month for six months to get weighed in, get all vitals done and talk about what you are doing to lose weight. I don't know why Kathrynh's visits weren't covered because mine were billed as regular doctor's visits and only had a co-pay. At the end you have the doctor send the surgeon's office the seven chart notes.

All insurance companies are different so you will want to call your insurance company to see what your requirements are. Some want you to see their nutritionists some don't.

I have BCBS of Texas. I had been to WW and Meditrim off and on for years. I lost but always gained it back. My records from WW and Meditrim were enough for my doctor to submit to insurance for approval. I turned in my paperwork, got approval, and had surgery within 3 weeks. It was great not having to wait.

How are you doing so far? I am not heavy enough--YET-- to get the surgery. I am about 60lbs over weight and cannot loose it! Did you have health problems from being over weight? I love the idea but the surgery parts kinda scares me. Trying to gather info.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
