does medicare cover lap-band?

Recommended Posts

hey guys, thank u for your help. it makes a bit more sense now... although this may seem a silly question,but...what are the fills? and what sort of procedures u have done by doctors regurarly after the lap banding? for how long u need to have them? is this "filling" going to be for life??

the band is made of silicone and is inflatable

every month or so the surgeon will add a small amount of normal saline via the port to make the band tighter which means you will eat less

each of us are different in how many fills we will need and how much fill is in our bands

i didnt get my first fill till 10 weeks post op

others get one earlier depends on your surgeon

i have had 4 fills and now have 4.75mls in a 10ml band

i now have good restriction and only eat very small meals

some people have more some have less in their bands

you need fills regularly until you feel you are at an optimum stage

with little hunger and are satisfied with small meals and losing well

once you have reached the weight you desire then we still need to visit our surgeons annually and will sometimes need a top up

its also possible to be too tight and sometimes you need an unfill....this has happened to me just the once.....where i went in for a fill....and then had a few days where i couldnt even get my own saliva to stay down and no Fluid at all

if this happens you need attention straight away as dehydration happens quickly....but it isnt the norm so dont be too worried

hope that helps you to understand a bit better

and im sure someone else will be along who may explain it even better than i can

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
