Newbie.. Having surgery 08/24.. Please read.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am having surgery on the 24th of next month, and my surgeon is asking me to do a 3 week milk diet. Has anyone had to do this before, AND have you fallen off the wagon in those 3 weeks. For those of you that DONT know about that diet, its basically all I can drink is skim milk, 3 times a day, as much as I can in 5 minutes. I can drink Water as well, and crystal light, but thats it. And my Vitamins also.

Im worried about falling off the wagon simply because next month, about 10 days after I start, I am heading to my high school reunion. I am discipling myself right now to be prepared for it, but with the drinking, and the eating with friends, Im worried I will fall off the wagon.

Any advice on that?

ALSO,

Can anyone tell me what YOU ate after surgery. I hear Protein Shakes, yogurt, broth, those things are acceptable, just wanting to get a feel for what life was like for all of you weeks after your surgery.

Thanks in advance!

Elaine

Honestly, I didnt have to do any presurgery diet except for nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before but every doc is different. Good luck with that one.

The day after surgery all I drank was water...then it was sugar free koolaid with Protein mix added and anything else that could classify as a liquid.....I did a lot of yogurt shakes and added flavor free protein mix to EVERYTHING!!

YOU CAN MAKE IT THRU!!!!!!!!! When its over you'll be thankful that you followed your docs instructions.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
