Is Bariatric Marketing Out of Control?

Recommended Posts

To keep my Bariatric Learning Center website up to date, I am constantly doing research online to learn about new techniques, surgery risks, stats and the like.

Here's something I've noticed over the last year or so. Does anyone else think that the marketing techniques of bariatric surgeons and surgery centers have gotten out of hand? I don't mean all of them, of course. But many of the websites I see on a daily basis are just plain ridiculous.

Remember the days when there was virtually no medical marketing of any kind? Maybe I'm just getting old or something, but I find it all disturbing. I even published a new blog article today on this very subject:

Do Bariatric Surgeons Think You’re Stupid?

I guess I'm just wondering if I'm alone in my cynical perceptions. Your thoughts and comments are welcomed!

You know, you are 100% right. When I started researching this, I ran across ad after ad that showed some lovely model frolicking somewhere with nary a scar or stretchmark over her entire 110 lb body. They all made me roll my eyes. It took a lot to dig through the crap ads to get to the information I needed.

I also got a lot of media about lap banding and one thing I really appreciated was Realize obviously had people who either had lost a lot of weight (one girl playing tenis in the brochure obviously has saggy skin) or larger people (of course, as I say this, there is a man in a swimsuit in the brochure that they forgot to photoshop his bellybutton back on, LOL). That was nice to see. I knew the model was fake and I was never going to look like her.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
