My mother has Tricare and is hoping to be banded ASAP.

She is 62 years old, 130 pounds overweight and has type II diabetes, bad knees, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and severe back problems (her back surgeon told her she should never weigh more than 120 because it is so bad).

Do you guys think she will be able to get through the system without too much problem? She is so excited at the prospect of losing weight and getting healthier. She told me that she has been having dreams about being able to get out and enjoy life again. I think we will both be heartbroken if she is not approved.

We are going to the seminar on October 21st.

Wow, this thread is great. I've learned more with reading it for 20 minutes than I've gathered for the last month elsewhere:) I do have a couple of concerns. I just registered with Tri-care and picked my doctors this week. I have not had health insurance since I was pregnant 2 years ago. Does anyone know if there will be any kind of a waiting period? Kinda feels wrong to sign up for the insurance one week and request a 15000 dollar operation the next week..But don't get me wrong, I'll do it! I don't think I'll have a problem getting approved. I'm 5'5 and 260 lbs and have high blood pressure and cholesterol and I think sleep apnea. So I guess my first step is to get some meds!

Nowhere yet, we're in the DFW area. My husband just got accepted into the nupoc program. He is active, but his orders right now are to finish his degree. It's a sweet deal really. I'm not looking forward to the time apart later, he'll be on a submarine :) for months at a time. But other wives have endured it and I'm sure I'll be able to as well. We'll be in Charleston when he graduates though. It looks like your due to get your surgery soon, Congrats!! I hope my submission and approval goes as quick as yours, I don't mind waiting, but who wants to??!

I'm sure she will have NO problems on getting approved as long as she gets all her tests done (pscy eval, nutricionist, PCM letter and sleep study). Besides the nutricionist eval she should be getting all paid by Tricare.

Hi there.. I am too nervous that I won't get approved also. Although TriCare (Prime) approved 4 doctors visits. My PCM has filled out the Letter of Medical Necessity Paperwork, Clearance for Surgery and Blood Work. I go see the Bariatric Surgeon on Monday. I am hoping that everything will go smoothly !!! My BMI is 39-40 with a history of hypertension, high cholesterol and lower back pain. Just wish me luck for MONDAY !!:D

You should have no problem getting approved if you are 100 lbs overweight according to the metlife table. Tricare could care less what your BMI is..my surgeon's office had a long discussion with a Tricare prime representative about it.

That's what I was told also....BMI doesn't matter. It's strictly case by case as long as you have the 100 extra pounds and a health problem that will be improved by loosing weight.

Yeah it does suck, I got lucky I guess. Having tricare is ahrd enough! I couldnt find a physchologist who took it so I was able to have that done on base too.

That is good to know, I haven't been able to find a physchologist either, but hopefully can use the one at Carswell. Congratulations:thumbup: on the surgery date!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
