new w/ questions

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I have a few questions. I have never had any weight issues until about 2 years ago. Now, regardless of what I do, I cant lose the weight. I am only 35 pounds over, and positive that no doctor would touch me, never mind the insurance coverage.

I do pilates, cardio and swim.......

So.....I have been contemplating Lipo, but I am scared to death that it wont work either. I need a semi-permanant fix.

I read that there are clinics in Mexico...what was that doctors name on Oprah?

Also, I worry about the health risks of not being obese.

Sorry I know that I my weight might sound minor, but it is causing so many problems, mentally, physically.....I am sure you understand.

Thanks for feedback!

I am about the same as you - I do not know what happened - been thin all my life or at least not too much over my ideal weight - then about 2 years ago when I went through menopause gained in my mid-section - my stomach is very distended and hard - I need to lose about 40-45 lbs - have had Lipo a few times - wish I had never done it - changes your shape too much - I was banded 3 weeks ago and have not lost any weight - I am eating less and not things I shouldn't - no carbonated drinks, no bread, soft foods, etc. Why can't I lose the weight? It is very depressing. I even went and had a CT Scan to make sure I didn't have a tumor in my stomach and that was what was making my stomach stick out - my legs are thin but my stomach looks like I am 8 months pregnant. My face is thin, my arms are medium - from the back look fine but when I turn around I have this horrible hard distended stomach. I paid for the band myself - not covered under my insurance and they wouldn't have qualified me anyway. Thanks for listening.

PJD, it is too soon for you to be losing any weight. I had surgery 8 weeks ago and only lost after my first fill, at that it was 1 lb per week! I've now had a second fill and i think the band is starting to work. I am not sure, but I think if you have less to lose, maybe it takes longer to start working or something??

Fab4:

I think that lap band is too drastic for someone that needs to lose 35 pounds.

I suggest that before you do a band, please go and see a nutritionist. It sounds like you are exercising enough, so if you see a nutritionist and journal everything that hits your lips you might see that you can lose a pound a week without getting a band.

While a lap band is alot less risky than gastric bypass it is still surgery, major surgery with general anesthesia. Any time you have general anesthesia you are putting yourself at risk. Based on needing to lose 35 pounds, and not 165 pounds (like me), I would try a few more things before going for a risky surgical procedure.

Best wishes.

Sue

Hi Fab4,

I kinda agree the lapband is a big life change and also a big risk for 35lbs. I would suggest the nutritionist and asking your dr about a drug called Phenterimine its meant to help people trying to lose that last little big of weight that won't go away no matter what. it's actually a stimulant and appitite suppressent thing a low dose of meth (as my brother would call it) Wishing you all the luck no matter if it's 10lbs or 300lbs it can still affect people mentally but bariatric i think is more for physical problems as well as mental. Good Luck!!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
