My surgeon requires me to follow a "liver shrink" diet for the two weeks preceeding surgery. Anyone else doing this?

I have the option of doing a low-carb diet for 2 weeks prior to the surgery, or a liquid diet 1 week prior, to shrink my liver.

I chose the low-carb!

I will be getting banded on Friday, July 25. I am required to do a 4 day liquid diet prior to the surgery. I am not looking forward to starting that diet on this coming Monday. But I am looking forward to being banded. Good luck to all of ya'll. YAY:thumbup:

same here, on low carb for 2 weeks...and i'm taking it really serious, after reading these post...people already given general anesthesia...only to wake up and find no band because liver was too big! OMG....so if doc says diet, then DIET....also from what i've learned see if they require you to lose any weight prior to surgery, thats been a problem too....after reading posts i emailed my doc's office today, she said my doc doesn't have a requirement for me, but i know plenty others from this board that do have a wL requirement...good luck

My doctor required a 30 day liver shrinking diet which included 3 meals a day,low fat, low calories, and no sodium. It also includes Clear Liquids only for three days before surgery. I will be having surgery this Wednesday July 16 and I've already lost 14 pounds. It's been tough especially this liquid part and I'm starving but I'll hang in there because I've only got 2 more days til I'm banded!!

Most surgeons require this because it will make it safer for surgery. It annoys me when people say oh I'm required to loose this for surgery - overall your not - the surgeon puts you on the diet to shrink your liver because the less fatty it is the safer the surgery will be and easier - he has to move your liver to get to your stomach thats why they require the preop and post op diet.

Yup, I'm only having to do my liver diet for 8 days, but I'm ready to eat the couch today on day 7! LOL. I'm on liquids and literally 3 low carb foods that I can chew on...I just wanna take a second to thank God for carrots...ok, I figure that day 9-SURGERY DAY-will prove to me that all of this is worth it. I'm just glad I didn't have to do it for two weeks. Good luck to you, you can do it.:tongue_smilie:

Just ending day two of "Optifast" liquid diet. Nothing but 5 shakes per day plus any other non carbonated diet liquid, Water, Jello, popcycle or broth for 2 weeks. Optifast keeps me satisfied for about 2 hours tops. I hear once you get past the 3rd day on a total liquid diet it's smoother sailing. Surgery is on 7-28 (Monday). Don't want my fat liver to pop up and scare my surgeon!!!

I just finished day 3 of my Protein Shake diet. I drink 3 shakes a day made with skim milk and ice. Plus, I eat sugar free popsicles and Jello. I am also allowed a salad with only certain veggies and 0 calorie spritzer spray. I'm eating about 600 calories a day and tons of Protein. My doc wants me to lose 5% of my total body weight before surgery. That is 16 lbs. I've already lost 7 lbs in 2 days and will weigh myself in the morning. I've stopped running to the bathroom to pee so much. I can't say that I've been really hungry. I'm trying to listen to my stomach. I have dreamed about toasted wheat bread with tons of butter on it and a big ribeye steak from Claimjumpers. But I'm determined to do this. I hope you guys are right and after tomorrow, it gets easier. I'm expecting that time of the month in a couple weeks and I'm sure I will be wanting chocolate. That will be my true test. My surgery is in 1 month. I can't imagine how much I would lose in that time if I just continued eating like this!:frown:

I started the pre-op diet on 4th of July.

My surgeon required three weeks on Optifast (three shakes) and 225 cal worth of certain veggies. The length of the pre-op diet depends on the BMI. Mine is about 47. Patients with smaller BMI do just two weeks in his office.

The first three days have been horrible with headaches, tiredness and a "fluffy brain". I didn't feel like myself. I also missed coffee. Now I am actually doing okay. Do I miss food? Yes and no. Not really eating makes life a little easier, but I still have to cook for my family.

I don't know exactly how much I lost so far, since I forgot to step on my scale for a few days. I just hope the liver shrank enough so the surgeon can place the band safely and I have a shorter recovery time.

That sounds pretty much like what I'm eating. 3 shakes a day (I like the nectar Protein mix), and certain veggies only with 0 calorie salad spritzer. I'm starting day 4 and I've had the headaches from caffeine withdrawal, most likely, and a feeling of head hunger. I have been feeling more energetic from the weight loss, but just a little out of it. At least more than usual. LOL!

Vegas, you might want to double check on using skim milk in your shakes.< /p>

My pre-op diet guidelines are 8g fat, 25 carbs and 70+g Protein a day, and a cup of skim milk has 12 carbs. I didn't think to check that until a couple of days into the diet, but I had to drop the milk for Water.< /p>

Read over your literature again or call your dietician/doctor to confirm.

Yes, thanks, I called him last night and told him exactly what I was eating and doing and he said the calorie count is good and the weight loss is good. I actually wasn't eating the salad and he said I could add that with a calorie free salad spritzer, so I'm excited to be chewing something. But I'm down almost 10 lbs in 3 days, so I'm psyched.

He had given me a more lenient diet last week with chicken and starches, but I was thinking I was going to have surgery in July, much sooner, and so he suggested the Protein Drinks for faster weight loss. Now, I'm having surgery on August 14th, and I'm liking the faster weight loss with the Protein Shakes, so I'm trying to stick to that...kind of so I can get used to the postop period also.

It's been fun! Thanks for your concern, TxShtKicker! Oh, by the way, I lived in San Antonio for 30 years, so I'm proud to have called myself a Texan once. LOL!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
