Question about food.....

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm just starting the process of getting the banded and found this site. It has been extremely helpful. I do have a few questions if you all don't mind. I think everyone has a different experiences but if someone could help that would be great.

Can people still eat steak? (I'm not talking about a whole 12oz steak) I had read somewhere that it is very hard on your band and people usually get sick.

How about Hamburger meat? Does it make you have gas or irritate your stomach?

thanks for the answers!

Hi MH2010,

I was banded on the 16th Jan.08. I have about 8mls in my band and can eat any foods including steak grilled or done on the BBQ. I try not to eat too much meat though as it does sit heavy on my stomach. Mince is fine though. This was a problem I had even before the band. Just remember to eat a little slower and chew harder things a little more than you would have before. Good luck with your banding journey.

The last time I tried steak it did an immediate u-turn :)... I tried Trader Joe's Authentic Carne Asada, it was really tender and I had no problem with it so that is another option if you find you're not able to do the steak. I eat hamburger meat all the time and have had no problems. I currently have a pot roast cooking in the crock pot, it'll be the first time I've tried that since banding so we'll see what happens :(

Good luck on your Lap Band journey! :P

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
