Does anyone disagree with their nutritionist?

Recommended Posts

I'm not trying to get around the instructions I've been given but the nutritionist I'm working with pushes the low-fat agenda too far in my opinion. I personally don't like eating a lot of fake foods and I've only had any weight loss success by doing lower carb plans. The first three weeks after surgery I followed her instructions to the letter and didn't lose ANY weight! I decided to start eating low carb and immediately lost 5lbs. Mind you, nothing unhealthy, no fried foods or bacon.. but I feel SO much better.

This puts me in a tough position when I check in with the nutritionist as she constantly tells me to use fat free everything and to have carbs every day. Is there anyone else out there who also needs to do low carb to see results and if so, do you have to lie about it in follow up appointments?

I would not lie. I would explain that low fat is not working for you so you switched to low carb and are now losing. I would be truthful and ask her to work with you from there.

I think you're right. I hate the idea of lying but it feels like whenever I start to broach it, she poo-poo's it. I think low fat can work for some people but I'm not one of them. Thanks for the response

Low fat does not work for me either. Don't be afraid to be proactive in your health and diet. Speak up and tell her that is the way you want to go.

I'm a low-carb person, also. I tried the low fat and it didn't work. I'm not saying to not listen to the nutritionist, just know your weaknesses and strengths. A nutritionist is just like a teacher, they have to understand multiple ways to work with very different bodies. Just relax and do what works.

I'd do my own thing. I think what you eat and what makes you feel good is a personal thing and not a one size fits all.

For example, if I were told to do low carb, I would not do it. I live on complex carbs, grains, bread etc as the main part of my diet and it makes me feel good and run well. I eat enough Protein but dont focus on it. Luckily that's in line with how we are told to eat in Australia, but if I were in America and told to do the low fat/sugar substitute/high Protein thing, I would NOT do it and I wold probably just lie about it rather than argue.

I know better than anyone what makes me feel good and I figure there's no scientific consensus yet anyway on what is definitively the best diet, and probably never will be, so I do my own thing.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
