Here's my thought....Everyone complains about the amount of gas pains just after the surgery...and the carbination in Sprite Zero is simply gas, that's what makes it so fizzy...So, in order to minimalize the amount of pre-op gas, I'd stay away from it. Of course, this isn't an answer from a doc, but I think that it will just contribute to pain later. I've even heard people on here complaining of having gas up in their shoulders and neck...I'd stay away from anything questionable this close to surgery. I think that it's the beginning of re-training your body to understand..."My mind is in control of what I eat, not my emotions, not my cravings". Good luck with your surgery this week!

I am on my pre-op clear liquid diet. Surgery is next Wednesday. I am having my Protein Shakes for lunch and dinner. broth and sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles throught the day. My question is can I have Sprite Zero. It is clear, no calories, carbs, caffine or sugar. My doc is unavailable until Monday. Thanks for your help.

You know it is carbonated... so if u do get it open it and then shake it and wait until it is flat and then drink it... because once u get banded u shouldn't be drinking carbonated drinks.....

Sprite Zero is fine. The gas everyone complains about is not the kind in your guts but the gas they use to expand your belly so they can reach everything during surgery. It is trapped gas that travels up your body and causes the shoulder pains everyone seems to get a couple of days after surgery.

Well, my doctor/program was strict about absolutely NO carbonated beverages - during pre-op phase to change the habit of using carbonated beverages, and definately post-op to prevent stretching of the pouch from the cardon dioxide gas that is released.

You can drink it if flat. But it doesn't taste nearly as good without the fizz!

There are lots of different recommendations out there...consult your bariatric program/dietitian/surgeon.

I find that crystal lite, special K Protein Water, etc., taste pretty good when you want something other than Water.< /p>

Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
