Need Desparate for pre-op advise on liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I heed help, I have been given a short pre-op date of June 5 and I have to go on the liquid fast immediatley. I have been on it since Wednesday 5/28 but it is difficult. To be honest, I have slipped and had a sweet potatoe and some green Beans last night. I know I need to stay on this diet for the surgery next week but I don't know if I have given myself enough time to prepare mentally. I would postpone but the surgery has been postponed twice in the past and I don't want to do it again. It was postponed once for rejection by the insurance company and another because of a swollen knee which turned out to be torn cartilege.

This is my first time posting and I am desparate for any advise to help me stay the course. Also, does anyone know what happens if you DON'T follow the liquid diet completely? On a good note, I have lost 2 lbs in the 2 days since starting the diet. I am desparate to lose this weight.

Well, my doctor said if I didn't shrink my liver before the surgery there would be no surgery, so I had to stick with my pre-op diet.

Mix up your liquids - try different shakes, Slim Fast, Atkins, etc.

LiseTheLooser here on the LapBand Forum has a great recipe for a shake that taste like a Frappachino. Use a vanilla or chocolate Slim Fast shake, ice, low fat or skim milk and blend. Yummmers.

You don't have many days to be on the liquid diet, so you can do it! It'll be over before you know it.

Thanks EriaLyn,

Never thought of mixing shakes. I'll try that. I didn't quite understand the liver shrinking part but now that I do, I'll give a hardier effort.

Just to let you know - after my surgery was over the first question I asked my husband was, "Did the doctor say my liver had shrunk enough?!" My husband told me that the doctor had come out after surgery and told him that it went well and my liver had shrunk quite a bit, but it was still a little fatty.

I guess I expected that (hello - I'm still overweight) and even though I'd hoped that I'd shrink my liver down to nothingness, I knew that wasn't a reality.

My doctor told my husband that he could really tell I'd done the pre-op diet. It's easier on your doctor and you if you do the pre-op diet.

Good luck!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
