pre-op diet woes please read

Recommended Posts

Today is day 10 of my pre-op high Protein mostly liquid diet. I've done pretty darn good up until 3 hours ago. I've lost 11 pounds and have truly stuck to this except for two bites of hot dog 2 nights ago. Tonight we went to some friends house and I forgot to bring my Water, my Soup and an Optifast drink. I wAS craving normal food so bad that I just ate. I didn't over eat but I ate. I ate 2 chicken drumettes with terriyaki sauce, some homemade mac and cheese, 2 chips with salsa, and 1 bite of a bratt dipped in mustard plus a couple glasses of red wine..... Is this the end of the world????? I hope not......How does a person just give up food completely....I m a cook who loves to cook this is the whole reason I am going for the lap band instead of the gastric bypass...if I want a glass of wine I should be able to have one....I don't want to live on warm cottage cheese the rest of my life.... I want variety...just in small portions. Day 10 of my liquid diet has been a complete failure..... but.... is it really? Has anybody else ever slipped off their pre-op liquid diet? I need some support here:ohmy::cursing:

Thanks in advance

you no what i struggle with the same thing,,do i really want to worry about what i eat,,when i went to my nutrion class and consent sighning they stated that in 1200 lapbands my surgeon has never had to revert to an open banding from the laproscopic,so they said follow the pre opt diet so you don't have to be the first,,got me to thinking ain't no possible way everybody followed that diet to the letter,,just can't be statiscally possible,,my son is an actuary,,he figured this out,,lot of docs don't require a pre op diet,,,but most of the dr use the pre surgery weight in thier statistacs,,like when you first went to get weighed you like weighed 300 then the put you on the pre op diet and you lose 20lbs before banding ,after the banding they use all that weight you lost plus the post op diet in there statistics,,that boosts their numbers in the weight loss category's.....this is big buisness..i get banded in june,,maybe

Its not a failure at all - that pre op diet is absolute torture, pure and simple. Nobody could do that easily.

Do not be too hard on yourself. Instead of thinking about what you did with food, think about what you have not done to get you to goal. Tomorrow is another day. Be well.

You are doing awesome! Do not worry, one day does not a diet break. I was good on mine for 10/14 days. I lost 16lbs and my Dr. was pleased. I even had BEER. Just get back on it today, head on a long walk and enjoy the memory of that great food.

There are a lot of different post op diets - they vary a lot. I was allowed soft Proteins starting on day 4 post-op. (chicken, refried Beans, fish, cottage cheese, etc....) Thanksgiving occurred while I was on that diet and I ate some stuff that would not be considered soft proteins. (it was 1 month post op and 1 week before my first fill) I admitted to it at my fill appt. the next week and the nurse practitioner basically said it wouldn't kill you to go off the diet, they just give you that diet as the optimum but realize there are going to be times people go off it and it isn't really that dangerous. I wouldn't be too stressed out about 'cheating'. I think some doctors have people on mushies or full liquids longer than necessary and I feel really sorry for those people and am really thankful I was allowed soft proteins - and even that got mighty boring for a month. So hopefully you enjoyed the food you ate and can now go back to eating more closely what your doctor advised. But you are human and you have your limits!!!

Oops, just reread your original post - I see you are on your pre-op diet, not post op... So REALLY don't stress out! You can get back on track starting now and do what you need to do. Sorry for the mistake!

Hi, the pre-opt diet was what made me cancel the operation the first time around. BUT I spoke to my new surgeon at length about the pre-opt diet and he told me just to do the best you can - and to be honest that is all we can do.

If we could stick to a liquid diet 'properly' we wouldn't be considering surgery in the first place!! When I first researched about the band I thought to myself how the hell can they expect a person with dieting and weight issues to go on a complete liquid diet for 2 weeks - mental!!

I understand why now but I can honestly say I didn't sucessfully complete my pre-operation liquid phase correctly and three days before surgery I gorged on a gorgeous sandwich as my blood sugar was so low because I was running around London like a lunni for meetings etc...

I somethimes think that the people who make 'the rules' for the band forget that people still need to run their lives and operate correctly because of families and work responsibilities so I personally always think there is slight leeway on the rules.

It's all down to personal experience, I found the liquid before and after the opp very difficult because well I love food and hate the feeling low blood sugar gives you ... but that's just me.

Don't beat yourself up about it just relax and remind yourself that you are doing the best you can.

Best of luck,

Lauren

Ugh I can totally relate! I'm doing my preop Optifast now. I started last friday and I've slipped. I felt really weak, so I've been "cheating" with some grilled skinless chicken grilled w/Pam -no oil! I still feel bad. I've done it 4 times. But I still get under 1000 cals/day. Don't worry about one bad day. Its not even that bad - from what you've posted, you didn't go all out. It could have been worse. Just get back to it NOW. Don't wait for tomorrow. Best wishes.

Thanks so much everyone for all of your replies. I have pretty much gotten back on track but not as good as I was the first week. Tonight for example we had company over for dinner and I made shish ka bobs. Beef and chicken. well, I had 2 (possibly 3, over 5 hours) glasses of wine. I also ate a cooked onion slice and a BBQ'd slice of green and red bell pepper.....how much can that possibly hurt? I ate no meat, no potato and no desert...I ate my Optifast chicken Soup instead of all that good stuff.......thank god I like the optifast soups!!! I willl be soooooo glad when this is all over. In order to eat all this stuff I skipped 2 optifast meals.

Keep the encouragement coming!

Thanks

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
