Soy Protein Shakes - Yea or Whey?

Recommended Posts

Just want to interject with a few words about whey Protein and lactose intolerance:

Make sure you buy the whey protein ISOLATE, which is pure, and not the whey Protein CONCENTRATE, which uses lactose as a filler. The Isolate will mix instantly in liquid, whereas the Concentrate must be blended in order to get out all the lumps.

I'm lactose intolerant and have used the Isolate since banding, and like phil0355, my surgeon recommends that I have a Protein shake daily to assure that I get my protein intake from 60-80 grams daily! So it's belgian chocolate powder for me--yummy!:tongue2:

I WILL say, though, that the whey protein Isolate is more expensive than the whey protein Concentrate, but our bodies are so totally worth it! (And I get mine from www.amazon.com -- when you see whey protein on a shelf and it just says "Whey Protein", I always assume it's the Concentrate!)

I think some clarification is in order. I am not suggesting that soy is a "better" source of assimilated Protein than whey, or any other animal-based protein source for that matter. I choose soy over whey because of soy's health benefits, and not solely as a protein source.

I realize that depending totally on soy for daily protein requirements, over any length of time, may pose a problem. Given that...in a time of acute protein needs (i.e. post-op, dieting, etc.) a variety of protein sources is probably a good idea.

(For those of you just joining us... given an amount of soy with 10mg of protein and an amount of whey with an equal 10mg of protein, more of the whey protein will be assimilated/useable by the body than the soy protein.)

Note: I am NOTrecommending that anyone disregard their dietician's advice. I will be taking my decision to use soy instead of whey to my dietician to see what problems that may cause for ME and weigh the pros and cons.

Can we let this go now?

At Trader Joe's there is the "Trader Darwin" Unsweetened vanilla Soy Enriched Protein. It is $11.99 for 28 servings, 120 calories for two scoops and 22 grams of protein. It has no artificial sweeteners, which I like too. I mix it with unsweented soy milk...vanilla is good to buy also or the unsweetened chocoloate soy is tasty for a change.

You can add frozen banana or fruit (strawberries, pineapple, peach, etc) for some added fiber/flavor. I have found this to be the best one out there for taste, affordability, enriched vitamains and the fact there are no artificial sweeteners or fillers. I love Trader Joe's.

Thanks Kathy! Unfortunately, there are no Trader Joe's near me, or in NH at all. How dumb is that?! I'll have to have my sister pick some up from one of the stores near her in MA.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
