swelling after lap-band removal surgery

Recommended Posts

i had surgery to have my lap-band removed exactly one week ago today. (i had to lose the band due to slippage and complications). before surgery i had gotten down to 188 lbs, and at a place where my stomach was starting to look pretty flat. immediately after surgery i weighed myself and was 193 lbs, and now i am at 191 six days later. i know i'm obsessing but i'm hoping that it's Water weight, it seems like i have a lot of swelling around my belly area. that whole area is tight and round, as opposed to being flat and easily compressed before. what do you guys think?

how long did everyone have swelling for? did most of you have swelling at all? i am paying extreme attention to EACH lb because i don't want to do anything to gain a single pound back... right now i'm still on mushies and not eating very much so i don't know why else i would have gained.

would appreciate any advice.

thanks!

ifonly:

I read somewhere on here that getting your band is surgically similar to getting your band put in. I recall alot of swelling for about the first ten days when I got my band.

The Water weight when I got banded almost sent me over the edge - I gained 9 pounds in 3 days. It took about a week to ten days to get those nine pounds off and it's been going down since.

Take care.

Sue

I was a bit horrified at the amount of swelling I had when I had to have my band removed. I looked about 7 months pregnant and thought oh no...my nice flat tummy (achieved with abdominalplasty) was going to be a thing of the past :sneaky: But here I sit 10 months post emergency removal of my band and 7 months post RNY revision and my stomach is as flat as a board :leaving: So I was VERY lucky that things returned to normal!!

Scared to Death about my removal!

I just had my lap band removed on Saturday. I've gone from 191 to 200 in just 3 days. I know it has to be fluids because I was severly dehydrated and very unhealthy. I started to turn yellow because of all the deficiencies. I have been eating consomme and a little chicken in my cream of chicken Soup but I'm scared to death to climb back up the scale. I'm so weak right now that the tought of working out exhausts me. I know I will feel better after I heal but I'm still scared. Can anyone give me some encouragement out there? Please respond - good or bad. thanks

Is your MD aware that you're "turning" yellow? If your skin and eyes are turning yellow it is a sign of liver troubles and you should call your MD immediately!!!!! It's nothing that you should be posting about on a message board and waiting for a diagnois. Keep us posted and PLEASE call your MD ASAP!!!

Thanks. Yes, my MD knew and that's why he removed the band. I was just wondering about gaining all the weight back. I'm worried about that more than anything. Thanks for your quick reply though :)

I am in the exact same situation with weight loss and everything. I feel like I am pregnant. My band was removed on 5/16, and my stomach is so swollen. I hope it goes down soon and good luck

How long did your stomach stay swollen? I got mine removed 11/18 I’ve gained about 7-8 lbs even with working out and my stomach feels like it’s extended and I’m bloated even after eating healthy foods

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
