Is the band right for me?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been banded for nearly 2 years and have lost around 80 lbs. I had to get completely unfilled because I was having heartburn all of the time. I have suffered with a ton of reflux, esophageal spasms, and one ER trip. I am going to get a fill on Wednesday and am very scared to get weighed since I haven't had much in my band for months...and I have been doing ok symptom wise. I am seriously considering converting to RNY, although I do not like the idea of it, I still need to lose 130 lbs give or take. Has anyone else had these problems or considered another surgery?

I am not much help for you. I just got the band done 2 1/2 weeks ago. I am just now on solids (mushy) stuff. I have wondered if I didn't need to do the RNY because I am a snacker!

Hi jbrule,

Although I have only been banded 2 months, I'm already questioning my decision. I have spasms too. They just started today. Can you tell me what yours are like? What did they say is the cause and what to do about them? Mine just started out of the blue, this morning before I even at anything (and it's been 3 weeks since my first fill). Also, my weight loss is going terrible. I think it's probably too early for me to seriously considering a conversion but you should talk to your doctor about it. I know that many people have done it. What is it about the bypass you don't like?

The spasms feel like anything from a stuck burp to bad pain right between my boobs. The Dr. isn't concerned about them, he said a lot of people get them. They get really bad when I get unfilled!

I don't like the idea of the bypass because your insides get rearranged, it scares me. I like the idea of the band because it is less invasive!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
