how long after surgery did you have a drink

Recommended Posts

my surgery date is 5/6. We are having a birthday party for my daughter on the 17th. How long after surgery did people have their first alcoholic beverage. I'm thinking I might have a glass of wine. Thanks for the input

Jaylow, you should be very careful with alcohol while you're in the liquid phase, for a couple of reasons. Obviously there's the empty-calorie issue, but that's always the case. But that close to surgery you're still going to be on a very low-calorie regimen, and any alcohol you take in is likely to go directly to your head. And if you're still on strict liquids at that point, you'll have to be very careful you don't give in to a desire for solid food.

Alcohol affects our judgment, and many people have regretted drinking because it can lead to very bad choices with regard to food. And that close to surgery, bad food choices can mean more than just a few extra calories--you don't want to compromise your healing by eating before your body is ready for it.

I didn't have my first drink until I was a year out. I'm not a big drinker so that was no biggie for me. Now since you will still be on liquids I would advise against it. Many drinks are carbonated and that is a big no no so close to surgery. Also you may still be on pain medications and you can not mix the two. I would ask your doctor to be on the safe side.

I would ask my doctor. Although I was 5 days out and had 1/2 a bloody mary sipped very slowly over about 1 hours time and I did feel it. (DH and me were stuck at the airport for 7 hours due to bad weather and my meds were packed in my checked luggage) I am sure the doctor woud say no.

New weight 04/27/08 205= 35 pounds gone!!

I had a drink about 2 1/2 -3 weeks after surgery.....but this was only 1 drink sipped over an hour or so. I think you would be fine with a glass of wine.

Enjoy!

I know i am a cheap date now though. a couple of weeks after my band i had to taste a cocktail someone at work made to see if it was correct, omg! a sip and i felt it!

i think one glass, sipped slowly should be ok. but remember to take into account for the calories

My first drink was a couple of months out.

I was 6 weeks out at Christmas time. I had a glass of wine and did just fine. I'm 5 months out now and have a glass occasionally. It helps me relax. If I'm nervous, tense or stressed out, my band tends to hurt. The hot tub helps too. :wink2:

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
