Good Evening,

During my doctor appointment this past Monday, which lead to setting up surgery for a hernia, my doctor also set me up with an appointment with another doctor to talk about Lap Band surgery.

He first mention the Gastric by-pass surgery, but I told him I did not really want to do something that could not be reversed. At least the Lap Band could be removed. At least this is my understanding at this time.

The reason I now have the hernia, is due to having a urstomy (urinary by pass) over 7 years ago. I dont want to have another surgery, to 'fix' one problem that just creates another one down the road.

Reducing my weight would help the hernia surgery to be more successful and to keep it from occurring again. Plus help with the other pesky health problems I have.

I came to the forums to read and learn about the Lap Band surgery.

Good health to us all.

Thank you. I will be looking around the site. My appointment is next month and I want to learn about the lap band so I can have some questions ready for the doctor.

If your insurance is covering your lap band surgery, then disregard this. But, sometimes your hernia operation and lap band surgery can be done together. That way, the anesthesia and perhaps other things are covered costs and it won't hurt the wallet as badly.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
