pre-op diet question

Recommended Posts

My doctor required a 2 week diet consisting of 3 protien drinks, 2 sevrings of fruit and all of the sugar free jello/popcicles and broth that I want. Cruel, I know! Well I've been doing it since Thursday morning and when I got on the scale this morning, Sunday, I lost 10 pounds. This is killing me, I feel week, am so cranky, have headaches and horrible stomach pain and noises. I know I have to shrink my liver but has anyone else expierenced this? Is 10 pounds in 3 days too much? I started this journey at 287, diet at 273 and am now 263. Thanks in advance for all of you replys.

It sounds like you are doing all the right things. This is the beginning of your journey, when you are changing all those negative eating habits. It helped me to load up on the Jello and eat at will. I didn't have time to do the pre-op diet because I went from approval to surgery in less than five days, so I lost like you in my first week after surgery. I think initially it is a lot of Water weight, and you should be fine. Always, if you are still concerned, please talk to your doc. Good luck in your journey! I am eight months out and LOVE my band! And even right after surgery, during recuperation, I knew it was a good thing. You will do great!

You might check with your Dr. about adding Protein powder to your broth....it can help with fatigue and hunger.

There are lots of diets out there, and yours sounds better than some. Some are strictly liquid, NO solid food, and some for up to a month pre op!!!

Just pointing out---it could be worse. And soon you will be banded, and it will all be worthwhile!

Anytime you are concerned---call your Dr.! They are being paid by you----they expect you to call with any problems.

Hope you feel better, and the pre op time goes by quickly for you!

Welcome to LBT!!

Not too many people are concerned with losing weight too fast..... most people on here are complaining about slow weight loss.

If you're drinking 3 Protein drinks a day, you'll be fine. You feel lousy because you're detoxing from all the bad food you used to eat.

Thanks ladies, I'm feeling better today. Things aren't as tough, I just needed to hear from some others that have been there. DH has no clue but he's trying to be supportive. My SIL had bypass 2 weeks ago but had no pre-op diet. She just had liquids the day before. And her BMI was higher than mine! Just goes to show how different doctors are!!!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
