Where do I start?

Recommended Posts

OK... so I am totally feeling ignorant even posting this. I am only a little over 2 weeks post op. I joined the YMCA as it is the closest thing to home for me. I have gone 2 times and it is SOOOOO overwhelming to me! I dont know where to start. I guess I am guitly of never really exercising before. Anyways, I got on the treadmill for 20 minutes and walked a little over a mile. When I got done with that, I looked around and didn't know what to do next, so I left! I felt too stupid to even ask anyone for suggestions. What is a good begginer exercise routine? Maybe I just have to suck it up and ask someone there for a little help, huh?

what you should do is try and go at a slow time at the gym.Make an appointment with someone there and have them take you around..bring a friend along as a guest and have them learn also if you feel embarrased

but remember everyone there did not know how to do it at one point good luck

you took a great first step!

when i first started working out, all i did for a bit was the treadmill. play with the speed and inclines.

maybe look into making an appointment with a trainer if they have them. they are worth their weight in gold.

good luck!

I joined the Y on Jan 4th--have been every other day since--up to 20 laps in the pool.. my Y has a 12 week program that has a trainer for free every 3 weeks for 1 hr to help. Haven't signed up yet cause i am going to Fla in Feb for 2 weeks and can't commit to the whole 12 weeks but will when I get home. There are many free classes and free time for swims at all different times--have horned in on some of the Water arobics but I do better in deep water only--have trouble with broken ankle that didn't properly heal...looking to have total ankle replacement in the spring. I converted to rny when I had esophagus issues...I now have NO problems with what to eat and vomiting is nil...so exercise can be more of a focus!!! I have never exercised in my long life--61 next month--and I will tell you I hate going but once I am there it feels great!! If the below 0 temps would go away, maybe I would feel more like going to the poos/gym. Everyone there really is nice and you don't have to be embarrassed about how you look...we are all the same..in need of being thereLOL!! best of luck...

Good for you!!

Try Water aerobics. It is easier on the joints. I love the water.

You can have a trainer show you a good sequence for the weight room. My appointment is tomorrow. I just joined last week. I missed a couple of days this week, and I can't wait to go back tomorrow.

Ask at the desk and see if with your new membership you get a couple of orientation sessions for free. At my Y, you get 2 when you join. It's also a good idea, like the posts above say, to pay for a trainer for a few sessions to show you the ropes. They may even have a volunteer who would help you. I think it's awesome that you went to the Y!!! NICE! If nothing else, keep going to walk and you will become more and more comfortable with being there. I'm sure they have great classes, too...I used to take a great circuit training class and you get lots of help on using the weights in that! Find out what they offer!!! GO FOR IT!!!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
