Recommended Posts

I'm on day 5 of my 2 weeks of pre-op diet (just shakes) surgery is on 1/16/08. I find it hard to drink as much Water as recomended. Also do they catheterize everyone before or during sugury? Thanks some questions are embarrassing. Pike:confused:

No catheter. You can get up to go to the bathroom. Dont know if you are a male of female but that was one of the hardest parts for me. Wish I was a boy just for that reason!!

I had my surgery at a surgery center and asked about the catheter, they said they put it in after I was out and they take it out right after they put it in, just to empty you out. I am sure every dr is different about this, but I never would have know I had a catheter in me at all if I didn't ask about it.

No cathetar here.. I bought a Rubbermaid 64oz Sipper bottle at Target that I carry with my everywhere. I found that helpful b/c it holds a lot but also gets you in sipping mode which is good for post op.

No catheter for me. The surgery isn't long enough and they had me up and walking within an hour of waking up. They made me walk to the potty and go before I could leave the hospital.

Just try your best with the Water because it is very important for all of us pre-op/post-op whatever. My doctor is OK with us using Crystal Light because it's calorie-free. Maybe that'll help spark an interest in drinking more?? Just an idea.

Water is very important to recovery. I know it is a pain in the butt sometimes, so Crystal Light is an excellent idea! I have no idea if I was catheterized during surgery. I know that not too long after the surgery I did have to go to the bathroom because of the IV. The nurses were going to give me a bed pan, but I wanted none of that I rolled out of bed and waddled to the bathroom.

Good luck- You are starting a very exciting journey!

This was my experience too. Good thing because there was no way that would have happened with me awake.

They told me ahead of time they'd be putting a catheter in while I was asleep. It wasn't there when I woke up so they must have just left it in until I was in recovery. No big deal at all.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
