Coffee on pre-op diet?

Recommended Posts

Could you drink coffee on your pre-op liquid diet? I meet with my nutritionist tomorrow and will get her guidance, but just occurred to me to wonder, and thought I’d ask here?

I really hope I can because I start Wednesday! If not, I should have been working on cutting down. 🙁

Every program will be different, but your best bet is to wean off it as quickly as you can. Decaf is usually fine, so you may start doing half-caf tomorrow with the goal of getting to all decaf before surgery. It's less a problem before surgery because you can make yourself drink extra Water to combat the dehydration coffee can cause, but it's impossible to do that after, so ideally you don't want to drink anything that makes you get dehydrated. On the other hand, some programs let you have one cup of regular coffee per day. Just don't go cold turkey if you want to avoid a killer headache. I spent two weeks weaning myself off caffeine before my pre-op diet started.

I was allowed coffee before during and after. It depends upon your program.

I wasn’t allowed coffee pre or post either. Didn’t bother me as I stopped drinking it years before. Thankfully I was allowed my green tea which I’ve drunk for 20+ yrs & herbal teas.

Was told the caffeine is too harsh on your smaller tummy especially while it is healing & so sensitive.

But as with most things, follow the plan you’ve been given. If you are to give it up after surgery for a period of time, I’d give it up before as the withdrawal can be wicked.

we weren't allowed coffee on the pre-op diet, or for the first three or four weeks after surgery. After that, we could drink Decaf. We weren't allowed "real" coffee until about six months out. But as others have said, programs are all different.

I had coffee as my last drink before surgery and when I woke from surgery I was asked did I want one. It wasn't a thing with my surgeon.

i was allowed coffee (black only...no sugar or milk, ofc).

though i think they told me not to drink any 12 hrs before surgery...but i think that was all liquids, not just coffee...i don't remember?

further, they served me both coffee and tea in the hospital after surgery...with cream and sugar packets for some reason. i take my coffee and tea black anyway so i didn't bother asking if it was a mistake. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I was allowed coffee during pre-op diet, only black no milk or sugar, up until 24hrs prior to surgery. Then it was no caffeine for 30 days post-op. Decaf was awful to me so I just went without my life juice for a month.

I have to say, Decaf tea is like a cruel joke. It looks and tastes just like regular, and yet I am still asleep when it's done. And then it's noon and I'm asking myself how I can still be tired after drinking all that tea!

I had my last pre-op meeting yesterday and while coffee is allowed on my pre- op diet, the nutritionist recommended weaning off it because it isn’t allowed/recommended post-op. I think I might do a couple of days on the new diet before starting to cut down on coffee. Starting pre-op tomorrow - fingers crossed!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
