So yesterday I decided to start taking walks at the park and I love it. Before I couldn’t stand it because I would be in so much pain now I can actually enjoy it. Walking around the house in door and out door errands wasn’t enough for me anymore and my MD cleared me btw. I start puréed food tomorrow and I can’t freaking wait. I’m so excited. Lol 21lbs down since 7/24/23 rny gastric bypass.

Quick question*
What are some things you guys did when you first started back exercising besides walking and what really worked best for you?

Is it normal to get a gagging feeling when exercising to hard or too much? Almost like nausea but not actually going all the way?

I was only allowed to walk for the first four weeks. After that, I was cleared to do everything but weights (I had to wait until I was eight weeks out for that). I mostly did Water aerobics and used the stationary bikes at my gym.

Oooo I can’t swim very well but I love to be in the Water. Lol Once I’m cleared to submerge/swim I will definitely do this. I have all my bathing suits ready. 🤗

I was able to start walking right away and got cleared for weight training at week 4. I’ve been swimming and doing a lot of Walk At Home with Leslie Sansone videos on YouTube because it has been 105+ degrees here and my electrolytes will tank if I’m out in it for too long. I alternate leg and arm day for my weight training. I’m still a little too heavy for HIIT training, but I can’t wait for that. I’m also going to try some sessions at Hotworx.

I definitely want to work on my arms sooner than later. They have always been so huge to me. Now I will have a bit more advantage now that I’m totally calorie restricted and exercising is not as overwhelming for me like it was before. But I will definitely take it slow and wait for restrictions to be lifted first.

I have been cleared for most exercises but walking outside is so enjoyable to me, I'm sticking with that for now. I started on a treadmill straight out from the hospital for 5 minutes working up to fifteen over a couple weeks. Then took it outside. I walked a mile for a couple months. Now I walk 2. I don't push myself timewise or speed wise.

I average a 2–3-pound weight loss a week so I'm satisfied with that. I get up and walk early before it gets too hot. Usually in the 70's. If weather is bad, I stay in and ride my recumbent bike while watching My 600 Pound Life. Never watched that show until after surgery. And never was a morning person till now. Odd.

Nausea will usually happen from pushing yourself too hard too soon. Ease into it. Stay hydrated and don't get overheated. Just move.

@BabySpoons congrats on getting to 2 miles. I did a lil over one and saw the light once I started to gag on nothing. Lol I believe I got excited at how much I was able to achieve and not be totally exhausted. I sat down for a bit. And then decided to go slow speed up and then slow back down. It worked. But now I know better. Thanks!

Congratulations on feeling great and exercising! I'm hoping to do more than the treadmill when I can get back some energy. The nausea could be caused by dehydration or electrolyte loss that isn't being replaced.

@CarmenG It makes sense. I was at the park but I had a 101oz bottle of Water with me sipping while I walked. That’s why I thought it was strange. But I’m going to do extra ice and Vitamin water to see if that will help tomorrow.

Believe it or not, sometimes too much water will wash out all of your electrolytes that you're not able to replace with food (because it's limited). A couple of weeks ago I was doing 80-96 oz of water a day, and I started cramping in my feet and legs at night. I switched one of my water bottles out for a zero-sugar Propel water bottle, and the cramps stopped that same night. I chose Propel over Gatorade or Powerade because it has less sodium, and I have to watch my BP.

Believe me, I know the feeling. Before WLS I struggled to move just walking across the room.

People kept telling me my life's about to change after surgery. They were so right.

      Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

      I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
      I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
