Anyone else able to chug water?

Recommended Posts

Hi all :) Hope you all had a great holiday break.

I'm 2 months post op, and I can chug Water very easily, I've had 0 issues with liquids this past month. I even made one of my Proteins shakes with 500mls water and drank it all in about 30mins.

It's weird because I can't eat egg, like at all, half an egg, instant regret, start foaming right away. Rice, same, a table spoon or 2 of rice results in foaming. As for other foods, I've been fine, I can eat meat so easily. There isn't any meat I've had an issue with. I'm even eating Beef Jerky, but obviously there's a limit to how much my stomach can hold and it's about 1/4 -1/3 a cup of food every 2hours. Water or liquids however, I can fit in a whole lot more around 1-2 cups, every 30mins.

So is it normal to be able to chug water? Is it just going through my stomach easily? I've also accidently drank while eating a few times, freaked out but had 0 issues. My Surgeon said to NEVER drink and eat, and that I won't be able to for the rest of my life, yet, I've done it a few times, and had 0 issues. So I'm not sure why and what's happening. Anyone else notice this happening? Any words of wisdom?

I can chug Water. Never had a problem meeting my goal.

Fluids don't bother me at all and I am able to drink like I never had surgery.

You aren't supposed to drink while you eat because it pushes the food through too fast and your body doesn't have enough time to absorb the nutrients.

Water hasn't really bothered me since a few weeks post op -- I can take a few big sips at a time (even through a straw) and can finish off 40 oz in an hour or so if I'm concentrating on it or working out, though it usually takes me a whole day to drink 80 oz just because I space it out. But I'm the same as you -- one egg and I feel fuller than anything, it's weird!

Also echoing @kcuster83, the drinking while eating rule isn't because doing it will give you foamies or dumping, it's because it'll push the food out of your stomach too quickly and will contribute to you feeling hungry again faster than if you let the food sit long enough to make you feel satisfied. Think of your stomach as a funnel now, it doesn't have the capacity to store a lot of volume so if you put liquid on top of the food you already have in there, it will push the food right through to make room.

Every program is different, but I will note mine specified drinking BEFORE eating isn't a problem.

From the beginning, I could drink Water with no problem. A couple weeks after post-op, it could be literally at any pace. But, early on, I still went slow to make sure I didn't injure myself.

I can chug a decent amount of Water. i thought with the surgery we could only sip tiny bits but thats just for the first little bit after surgery. Once you are healed up its pretty easy to chug tho not too much. If you do it too much it can be painful.

By 'chug' I understand many big gulps in a row? My capacity to do this has gradually increased in the 14 months since my sleeve. At first I could take one or *maybe* on a good day 2 big gulps of liquid followed by a gap (which I think *might* equate to your 500mls in 30 minutes), then two, then three. I'm now up to probably 5 big gulps in a row. It's really satisfying. 😂 I'm thinking this means that my pouch is expanding, as they seem to do as time goes on.

I can't chug in the same way I would after being outside in a hot summer day, but I can take generous gulps, which I REALLY enjoy.

I think it's normal for a lot of us! I'd even consider us lucky.

Nope still can’t more than 3 years out. One maybe two larger mouthfuls & that’s it. I get gurgling or my restriction at that point. Certainly couldn’t do more. So I just do regular swallows & never get thirsty. In the past I could down 300/400 ml no trouble if I was thirsty.

I'll be three years out in this coming March, I can probably chug nearly half a small glass of Water, but I generally do a mouthful at a time.

5 swallows is my limit. On 6 the odds are pretty good that everything will back-up on me, which is just about as much fun as it sounds. I can't remember the last time I went past 5.

Good luck,

Tek

WOW by the Grace of God 17 years ago I went to Mexico and had a lap band put on for weight loss and my waist was 64 inches and That’s more than 5 foot around and 18 stone my weight was 375 pounds. Today I went shopping for not sweats and I succeeded. I found pants and a shirt at an awesome price at Burlington by the way. But the real story here is, today. My waist is 45 inches and my weight is 260. Both incredible numbers but think about this. My waist is almost 20 inches smaller around Wow that’s a brain wrecker. Still, I love my band I even celebrate it’s birthday 10-26-06 FYI-it’s kind of like choking yourself, and never letting go. And trying to eat. lol Life is good

Hi all! I’m Heidi, a Canadian ex-Pat living in Sydney, Australia. I’m doing this surgery because my mom died 10 years ago from obesity, she lived her own 600lbs life.  So at 116kg, it’s time to make sure my daughters don’t lose their mom to obesity.
