I had VSG back in June of this year and at first I thought the acid reflux was going to be a temporary thing.

Unfortunately the acid reflux is awful, I am on RX medication for it that is not working and nothing seems to be helping at all with it.

Has anyone else had major acid reflux and found anything to help with it. I guess I will be sending a message to my doctor regarding this to see what can be done.

TIA.

they may be able to treat it medically (i.e., with stronger meds) - but there are some people for whom the only remedy is a revision to bypass. Although it's a lot more common that it can be treated medically - so fingers crossed! (I have nothing against bypass - in fact, I have one (got it because I had GERD prior to surgery) - but it's just a much bigger deal than taking some med!)

Unfortunately, reflux or gerd is a possible side effect of the sleeve. Definitely speak to your surgeon about how it can be better managed & your options.

I had reflux before my surgery which I managed most of the time with dietary choices. My reflux is worse now in that I need meds every day versus rarely before surgery. But the surgery also reduced some of the reflux symptoms I had like the horrendous hiccups. Try avoiding caffeine, carbonation & spicy & rich foods (though your current eating plan probably avoids a lot of these). Try not to eat heavy/dense Protein a couple of hours before going to bed. sleep on a wedge or raise the head of your bed with a brick. Worth a try to see if any of these things can help you even a little.

Did they put you on Omeprazole? It had the opposite intended effect when they put me on omeprazole and it made my acid WORSE so I went back to taking famotidine (which is what I took prior to my surgery) and I have no issues with acid as long as I take 2 famotidine before I go to bed at night.

Yes I got GERD after surgery and had a pretty tough time with nausea and reflux until they sorted my meds. I raised my bed at the head end with books. Bought a wedge and take 30mgs of Lansoprazole twice a day. I feel that I have this mastered as long as I don't eat within 2 hours of bedtime.

i am 16 months post-op and still have to take both Pepcid and Prilosec every day or the reflux comes back. I had ZERO history of reflux before my procedure.

Spoke to the Bariatric office today and advised them of my situation.

I was advised to take the Protonix 40mg 2x a day instead of just 1x a day.

I really hope this helps. I did not experience major reflux until the VSG procedure.

Do not regret having it done but hate this reflux.

I’m having a revision to Bypass on Jan 16th due to my severe reflux. I was on dexalant 60mg but my insurance won’t cover it anymore so I had to drop back down to 40 mg of omeprazole twice a day and that barely helps. I had reflux before my sleeve and should have had the bypass and. It the sleeve in the first place. Hope the new meds help.

I had acid reflux before the surgery, but the doctor also fixed a hernia when he did the sleeve so I haven’t had any heartburn with meds. Also my post nasal drip is pretty much gone. I would wake people up or keep them up at night coughing up phlegm.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
